Heroes and Heroines for the Future
Lake & dark forest
Darkness and light intermingle as we enter RadJoy
The future will require heroes and heroines who can cross willingly into challenging and unfamiliar places and get passionately involved with them.

These people will need to be modern shamans, those risk-takers in traditional cultures who leave the world of the everyday and enter the world of spirit, where they negotiate with illness and suffering and bring back answers, gifts, and healing to the village.

In a world that is likely to be slammed with weather of increasing ferocity, increased mining and drilling even as carbon dioxide suffuses the air, diminishing wilderness and vanishing species, and decreased access to clean water, individuals and communities will need help coping with the new reality. They'll need ways to discover meaning in the present, to love, to help others who are suffering even as they suffer themselves.

Crossing the boundary from an attitude of indifference, dislike, fear, or revulsion about wounded places and actually seeking those places out, getting reacquainted with them, and giving them beauty and attention is a way to begin making that shift.

See How the World Made Beauty
for the Earth

On June 21 people around the world went to wounded places, shared their stories of what the places mean to them, spent time getting to know the places as they are now, and made a simple act of beauty there. Radical Joy for Hard Times is a global community dedicated to finding and making beauty in wounded places. Reconnecting with these places, sharing our stories of loss and despair, and making acts of beauty there, we transform the land, reconnect people and the places that nourish them, and empower ourselves to make a difference in the way we live on Earth.
