 5 Tips for Making Beauty
 in a Wounded Place

1. Everything you need is already there. Creating a gift for the place with what it provides you--sticks, stones, sand, even garbage--you understand that a place, like a person, is whole and complete as is and contains everything necessary for transformation.

 2. The gift of beauty requires no planning. You will know what to do in the moment, whether you are one person or forty, and if you don't know right away, you will discover it through the process of doing it.

 3. You are just the first artist to work here; the weathers and creatures of the place will embellish what you start.

4. The gift of beauty is not for posterity. You have given something away and now it is in the keeping of the recipient. No one can take it home to hang on the wall, and no one will judge it.

5. The act of beauty involves everyone present: children, the elderly, the disabled, the ones who are confident about what they're making, the ones who are shy. Dogs often participate. Sometimes traffic participates. It is the making that counts.
