On May 23, 2012, one year after a tornado cut a devastating swath through Joplin, Missouri, the people of the town gathered together not just to remember the wounds but to create beauty out of the ruins around them and in their own hearts.

They walked together through the path of the tornado... prayed at the ruins of churches and the hospital... remembered the 161 people who had died in the storm... and noticed the beauty of wildflowers blooming in ground that had been smothered in debris.

Here Emily Frankoski and Dolores Bilke give new life to a tree that killed by the tornado.
