Will You Notice What Others Don't
Galatians 6:2 Share each other's burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.
It always puts a smile on my face to see mascots for businesses dancing outside holding their restaurant/store sign. I can't say that it is the marketing ploy that gets me to immediately go to that business, but it does make me laugh.
I especially love the ones who dance non-stop and have big, cheesy smiles. However, as I drive away from the seemingly elated mascot, I can't help but wonder what is actually going on beneath the mask... Is he/she really THAT happy? Or is the person on the inside actually dreading the thought of having to dance in a public median?
Like a mascot, most people wear masks... some wear multiple masks. They may be representing one thing on the outside but feeling something totally different on the inside.
Deep pain may be masked by a smile, and deep-rooted fear and anxiety may be masked by laughter.
I don't believe all "masks" are purposeful deceptions. Many people don't want to overwhelm others with their pain. They may be fearful of what the truth may hold, or they are possibly embarrassed by their actions.
So instead, they smile and play the part. I think that many people who are hurting... who are "masked" just need someone to take that first step for them.
They need someone who is sensitive enough to the Holy Spirit to say, "Hey, I know you are smiling today ... but is everything okay?" There are even times that I can see pain beyond a smile. I may not know the source of the pain, but I know it's there.
I challenge you today to be sensitive to those around you. Look beyond what others may see and take the time to free someone from the mask they have been wearing. Let them know you are praying for them... let them know you care.
If YOU are that masked individual who is carrying the weight of the world, I encourage you to find someone you love and trust --- someone who has a strong relationship with God to share your pain with ... to confide in. You will be SO glad you did!
Dear Lord, Help me to always see beyond what is on the surface so that I can be used by You to bring hope to seemingly impossible situations.
