Deuteronomy 6:5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
As a teenager, I often heard my Pastor share an old adage that we should consider before speaking. His advice was that everything we say should pass three tests... "Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?"
In college, I often carpooled with friends. Long drives could potentially end up in unnecessary gossip. So, I printed this "test" out and taped it on my dashboard as a reminder before speaking.
Many people tape reminders around the house. Some even place notes by the door that say "turn off lights."
I love today's verse, but when we read on, we discover a great "reminder." Verse 6-8 says, "And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as REMINDERS."
These verses essentially say that in order for us to follow God's commands, we have to rehearse them all the time... morning and night... and we have to create reminders for ourselves.
For example, if you are struggling with fear, it's not enough to read a Bible verse on faith and then to forget about it. You need to commit that verse to your memory, tape it to your dashboard or to your door, talk to others about it... Only then will it become a part of you and will you be able to overcome your obstacles.
I challenge you today to find verses that will help you conquer whatever you are going through or struggling with... verses on healing, healthy relationships, faith, personal value, compromise.... Only then will it become a part of you and will you be able to overcome your obstacles.
Dear Lord, Thank You for giving me Your Word which is full of Your promises for my life.
I thank You, my Jesus, for dying for me. I believe that You are Lord and that God raised You from the grave so that I can have eternal life.
Reflection: Have you been rehearsing your situation or the promises God has for you?
