Do the Right Thing!

Proverbs 22:6  Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

After a long day of shopping with my oldest daughter when she was a teenager, we realized that an extra item had been placed in one of our bags.  This was such a teachable moment for me.  I was given the opportunity to do the right thing and to have my daughter witness me doing it.

I immediately called the store to report what had happened.  Surprisingly, the manager of the store informed me that the item did not have to be returned ... it could be considered a freebie ... a gift as a token of their appreciation for my honesty.

I once read that our children learn from parents in two ways: by looking at our lives and by listening to our words.  If I had failed to make that telephone call, my daughter would have missed out on a valuable life lesson.  She may have surmised that keeping something that did not belong to her was acceptable as long as she did not intentionally acquire it.

My challenge to you is to ensure that today's scripture is firmly established in the lives of your children or the lives of those watching you through the manner in which you handle day-to-day situations.  Realize that parents cannot train children in the way they should go unless they are willing to consistently DO THE RIGHT THING!

Dear Lord,  I desire to live a life worthy of You ... a life that my children can emulate. Help me to teach my children character through my words and actions.

I thank You, my Jesus, for dying for me. I believe that You are Lord and that God raised You from the grave so that I can have eternal life.

Reflection: Are you taking advantage of the daily opportunities that come your way to teach those in your life the importance of always doing the right thing?
