The Extra Mile

Matthew 5:41 If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles.

After suffering with a recurring headache for over a week, I was finally able to get an appointment with a doctor on Friday morning.  In addition to receiving an injection and a prescription for two types of medication, my doctor made a surprising announcement.  He offered to give another injection to me at his house over the week-end.

When I told this to my husband, we both agreed that my doctor's offer was truly representative of someone going the extra mile.  Someone who was willing to put the needs of another person above his own.  Someone who went above and beyond what would be considered the normal treatment.

As I was reflecting on this unusual situation, I was reminded of today's scripture.  I once read that this scripture described the common practice of Roman soldiers forcing civilians to carry their armor for one mile at a time. In response to the civilians' resentment in being forced to do this, Jesus made a shocking statement.  He encouraged them to not only carry the soldiers' armor for one mile BUT to carry it for TWO MILES.  I am certain the soldiers who received this treatment were just as grateful as I was with my doctor's gracious offer.

Dear Lord, My desire is to bless those You bring into my life.  Help me to unselfishly meet their needs AND to do it with joy.

I thank You, my Jesus, for dying for me. I believe that You are Lord and that God raised You from the grave so that I can have eternal life.

Reflection: What is one way that you could go THE EXTRA MILE for someone in your life?
