The GoodFather

Matthew 7:9-11 9

9"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?

11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

rocks
I couldn't imagine my son asking for a piece of bread, and my response being, "Here, chew on this rock!" We want the best for those that we love. Now, if my son asked for a rock for dinner, he may get bread (or pizza) instead! We ask the Lord for many, many things, and that's not a bad thing to do. The Bible lets us in on a little secret in James 4:2 "you do not have because you do not ask." God is a loving Father, and He wants to bless you with the things you ask for. However, He also knows what is best for you.

As the baby of the family, there were often things that I saw my older siblings doing that I desired to do as well. I was told, "When you get older, you can do that too." At 6, when that's the most drama in your life, it's easy to feel isolated and insignificant. However, had my parents allowed me to participate in the same activities, I could have been easily injured.

God does desire to give us the things that we ask for, but more so than wanting to please us, He wants to protect us. I do not always understand the ways of God, and I do not always understand why certain prayers are answered or unanswered. Unanswered prayers can make His children feel like the six-year-old me being told "no" felt-isolated and insignificant.

It may take years to realize why a particular prayer was unanswered. God knows the beginning from the end of time. He has a perspective and vantage point that none of us have. Therefore, we are limited in our understanding.

I challenge you to continue asking and praying for those things that are important to you, and trust in Him that as a good Father, He will always do what's best for you.

PrayerDear Lord, I thank You that You desire to bless me and that You always do what's best for me. You are such a loving Father. Forgive me for the times that I doubted You.

I thank You Jesus for dying for me. I believe that You are Lord and that God raised You from the grave so that I can have eternal life. In the Name of Jesus I pray, Amen
