My daughter, her husband, and two granddaughters have moved into our house while they are building their new house. Before they moved in, my four-year-old granddaughter Sophia informed me that her mom and dad would be the "bosses" AND that my husband and I would be the "grandparents". My daughter, who overheard as Sophia spilled the beans, laughingly explained to me that Sophia had informed them the night before that they would be her brother and sister when they moved in with us because Pop and GG (our grandparent names) would be the parents.
My daughter explained to Sophia that moving in with us would not change things - they would remain the parents, and we would still be the grandparents. Sophia innocently inquired, "Does that mean that you and daddy are still going to be the bosses?" to which my daughter responded with an emphatic "YES!" I believe that we often have confusion concerning "Who's the Boss?" in our own lives. Exodus 20:3 clearly conveys that God desires to be the One we worship, the One we follow, and the One we live for. God is telling us in this scripture that we are to worship Him and NOT put other gods before Him.
Sadly, many other things can take the place of God in our lives-careers, sports, relationships, possessions, technology, or hobbies. In fact, we can make an idol out of just about anything. God knew that these things could be stumbling blocks for us. He identifies this in Ezekiel 14:3, "Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all?" Has your access to God been like the men in this verse-limited by distractions and idols?
I challenge you to assess your life to determine if you are serving God and doing things His way OR your way. My encouragement to you is to allow God to order your steps each and every day.
