Philippians 3:13 "No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead..."

Last year may have held many disappointments, struggles, or hurts, and you may desperately need a fresh start. For others, last year may have been the best year of your life filled with excitement and joy. Regardless, God challenges us to forget the past and to look forward to what lies ahead.
The Greek meaning of the word "forgetting" that Paul used in Philippians 3:13 means "to neglect." Webster defines "neglect" as "to give little attention or respect to." When God instructed us to "forget" our past, He didn't expect us to wipe out the memories of the loved ones we lost or painful experiences that we learned life lessons from. Instead, I believe God is saying that while we might remember those things, He does not want us to give so much attention to it that we can't move forward.
Likewise, there are people that have had very positive and happy things happen in their past, and they continue to compare every new situation and person to that past joy or past event. They are then unable to experience the awesome and wonderful things that God has for them.
I imagine a new year to be like standing in an airport waiting in baggage claim after a long journey. As the bags go by, some individuals continue to load bag after bag on carts surely to be weighed down while others walk right past baggage claim carrying just what they need to quickly be on their way!
My challenge to you today is to forget what happened in 2012 and choose to leave your baggage unclaimed in order to embrace all that God has for you in 2013. That may even mean forgiving yourself or others for mistakes made or letting go of the hurts and disappointments of the past. If your past is bigger than your future, you are truly limiting what God can do in your life.

Dear Lord, I thank you that scripture says in 2 Corinthians 2:9,"...No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him."
I love you Lord, and I ask you to help me focus on the great future that you have prepared just for me rather than being bound by my past hurts, successes and failures.
I thank you Jesus for dying for me. I believe that you are Lord and that God raised you from the grave so that
I can have eternal life.
In the Name of Jesus I pray, Amen
