Happy New EARS?

Mark 4:9

"Then Jesus said, 'He who has ears to hear, let him hear.'"

Maddox happy new ears
For the last couple of days, my two-year-old son Maddox has been telling everyone he meets, "Happy New EARS!" With no avail, we have tried over and over to help him say "year" instead. As cute and silly as this is, there is a lesson to be learned in the innocence of a child's mispronunciation of the traditional "Happy New Year!"

Throughout the New Testament, after Jesus ministers to the people, He says, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." I am sure we all have ears, and I am confident that the majority of us can indeed hear. However, in these verses, Jesus is speaking of "Spiritual Ears." God is constantly speaking to us throughout the day through life events, people we encounter or thoughts He gives us, but it's our responsibility to "tune" in and to discern His voice.

An easy way to think of this is like tuning a radio station. There are many frequencies and much activity going on throughout the airwaves, but until we tune into a specific station, we cannot hear what we intended to listen to.

I am sure we have all faced times in life where it felt like God was either not listening to us or not responding. Maybe you feel that way today.   The Bible tells us in Isaiah 59:1 that the Lord's ear is not too deaf to our call. God does hear you, and more importantly, He does care. However, until we intentionally purpose to "tune" in to Him, we will continue to miss out on what He is trying to tell us.

So, in the words of my son, "Happy New Ears!" My challenge to you today and for the upcoming year is to purpose to hear His voice. As shared yesterday, the easiest way to do this is by reading the Word of God. In the Bible, you will find the answers to all of your questions, concerns and challenges in life, and you will find great joy!

Dear Lord, I thank you that you do hear me. Forgive me for times that I thought you were not listening or did not care.  As I purpose to get to know you more,

help me look and listen beyond the daily distractions

that I may find You in all things.

In the Name of Jesus, Amen
