Did you know?
It all looks so easy... right?
Have you ever thought about what it takes to be a market vendor? Unless you are one or have been one in the past, probably not. Customers head out to the beach the 4th Saturday of every month excited to see what's new at the market, but why all these folks do this and how all these tents appeared, likely doesn't cross their mind.
In this issue, I thought I would let you into our world beyond the fabulous purchases you make each month!
Over the years, Phillip and I have met so many truly wonderful folks at the hundreds of markets we have participated in. The vendor market family is unique in so many ways. The folks that are full time vendors, especially those that hand-craft their products, are an amazing group.
There's a work ethic that these folks have that is like nothing else on earth! If they don't do there job (make the product) they will have nothing to sell at the market.
It's not uncommon to hear about working through the night to replace the product that sold on Saturday so you will have something to sell on Sunday. Not selling on Sunday because you had a great sales day on Saturday would never be considered. The excitement of selling out fills them with adrenaline that makes sleep laughable. But not for the reason you would think... money is wonderful, but the pride that they feel when a customer walks away from their booth excited about the purchase they just made is worth so much more! Remember Sally Field at the Oscars... "you really do like me!" It's a feeling like no other... you really do like what I made! So they show up Sunday bright eyed and ready to go.
So passion about the product is one thing but what makes a person want to spend likely every weekend, hauling around all the stuff needed to set up a booth, and then stand in that booth all day, sometimes multiple days in a row, often times fighting mother nature, talking to strangers to hopefully sell enough product to make the whole thing worth while?
Well, over the years we have heard many different reasons but the one we hear most is: "I wouldn't dream of doing anything else!"
These folks truly love sharing what they do with everyone! They want you to know how it's made and why they made it; it's what drives them and their creativity! At the end of the day, yes, it's a dollars and sense proposition but even if the day didn't go the way it was hoped it would go, they walk away with memories of meeting great folks and sharing their craft.
So this month when you come out to the market, be sure to take a minute to meet the vendors! You won't be sorry!
