Did you know?
Did you know that the very first "Market" in Texas was the famous First Monday Trade Days in Canton Texas?
IT ALL BEGAN ... in the 1850's when the circuit judge stopped in Canton on the Frist Monday of each month. This was the day the Judge held court. People from the area came to town on that day to conduct their business, stock their pantries and sit in on court proceedings.
Quite naturally, many also brought their own goods, produce and livestock with them to sell or trade.
By 1965, First Monday had outgrown the Town Square, It was then that the City of Canton purchased six acres just two blocks north of the courthouse. First Monday was moved off the square. Even though the event now goes from Thursday - Sunday, the name is now and will forever be known as:
First Monday Trade Days.
Maybe some day the Island Moon Market will be this famous!

Meet the Vendors
The Texas Sealife Center is a nonprofit 501c3 organization dedicated to the rescue rehabilitation and release of coastal and aquatic wildlife. The organization was formed due to a recognized need for additional wildlife support in South Texas and the growing number of animals that are admitted to wildlife centers in the U.S. annually. Though we are in our early development, the enthusiasm behind our cause is contagious and the momentum and public support is continuing to grow. Texas Sealife Center's mission includes:
- Rescuing injured or stranded coastal and aquatic wildlife
- Providing supportive care and rehabilitation for coastal and aquatic wildlife
- Successfully releasing wildlife back into their natural habitat
- Educating and promoting public awareness in the conservation efforts to save wildlife
The Texas Sealife Center was formed because of a recognized need for additional support for local wildlife rehabilitation and the growing number of animals admitted annually to wildlife centers throughout the country. Starting in 2010, a small group of volunteers decided to fulfill this need and formed the Texas Sealife Center. Through dedication and persistence these volunteers are making the dream a reality. Diligently working to build and foster relationships with local agencies, organizations, and individuals dedicated to wildlife conservation has been the cornerstone of our success.
December 20, 2012 - The Texas Sealife Center was awarded use of the Visitors Center building in Packery Channel Nature Park by the Nueces County Parks Board of Directors. This has been the most recent catalyst that has propelled our organization into the next stages of development and growth. We are currently renovating the existing building to allow visitors to explore the projects and future plans of our organization. In addition, we are working alongside the South Texas Botanical Gardens, Texas Master Naturalists South Texas, and Native Texas Plant Society to develop a nature trail for visitors. The nature trail will feature our native plants and trees as well as the local wildlife that inhabit this area.
We will be offering education events such, as fieldtrips to local school districts. We will also offer on site education programs for schools who want us to come and visit them. We will be offering programs on sea turtles, shorebirds and raptor and also programs about cleaning beach and our coastal environment. We hope to offer education on coastal ecology and raise public awareness for the coastal bend region through reaching out to the children and teachers in our schools. Becoming a part of an organization like Texas Informal Educators will allow us to better serve the formal educators in the area. It will allow us to get the word out to teachers and school districts on the education opportunities we offer both at the center and for site visits.

Meet the Vendors
Under the leadership of Larry Running Turtle Salazar, president of The South Texas Alliance of Indigenous People and a well known, respected artist, author, activist and wisdom seeker, The Ishka Monument Committee was formed.
It is in the process of raising funds for the construction of a 30 foot bronze monument to be erected on the second largest Native American burial ground in Texas.
The monument will be located at the Hans and Pat Suter Park on Ennis Joslin Road in Corpus Christi along Oso Creek and bay.
This site is a well known Karankawa fishing, hunting and burial site and the park is presently a sanctuary for birds and other coastal animals.
Efforts are also underway to make this a National Historical Site.
The statue will be created by Dave McGary, one of the premier artists of the American West. He is considered a master of Realism with his unique "ability to capture the human spirit."
His sculptures are on permanent display in Washington, DC and the Smithsonian as well as many museums and galleries throughout the United States.
It is the hope of the Ishka Monument Committee that along with the monument, a learning center will be also be established on the site.
We are currently in the process of expanding the Ishka Monument Committee to plan and develop fund raising activities for the monument. Present activities include the sale of
"The Pipe and the Pen', coauthored by Larry Running Turtle Salazar and the sale of other items including the recently released documentary "Sacred Journey of the Heart."
100% of the proceeds go to funding the monument.
Donations to the Monument Fund can be made via PayPal through our website at: http://ishkamonument.webs.com/ Checks should be made out to the Center for Progressive Studies and Culture "Native American Project" and mailed to: 1929 Yale St., Corpus Christi, TX 78416.
All donations are tax deductible.

Larry Running Turtle is a full-blooded American Indian of Tslagi and Apache descent and recognized as a wisdom keeper by his people. He was born in San Antonio Texas, and moved to Corpus Christi Texas where he has lived since the age of 7. His support of Native American issues includes countless ceremonies, lectures, television appearances, movies, documentaries, radio hosting and advocating for Native American burial grounds in Texas.
Because of Larry's efforts he has helped change laws in Texas pertaining to American Indian burial grounds. Larry studied Japanese and Korean martial arts for over 40 years with 4 black belts from 4 different styles. For years he studied and toured with Steven Segal. This led him to a 10 year commitment to study and practice Buddhist teachings and eventually he met His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Thich Nat Hanh a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist Monk. Larry is a role model to many and is an Ambassador for the Goodwill Treaty for World Peace for the Indigenous People's Grand Council of Peace. Recently he co-authored a book, The Pipe and The Pen, Remembering Our Original Instructions with Pamela Two Spirits Reader Ph.D. The book is about Native American, Buddhist and Catholic teachings. |
