Griffin Games 2016 a Huge Smash Hit of School Spirit and History
I am pleased to share that Griffin Games 2016 was a huge success. For the first ever Griffin Games, we made a mark on our school culture that will make this now annual event one of the highlights of the year.
Seniors and Freshman were on the Red Team and Juniors and Sophomores were on the Blue Team. Additionally, we divided the entire staff between the Red and Blue teams. Each day, teams could earn points through the canned food drive, social media posts, and lunch time games. Today, we concluded the games in the first-ever all school assembly on the track.
The teams competed for additional points by playing Giant Ball, Bubble Soccer, and completing an obstacle course. Although the Blue Team entered the day in the lead, it was the Red Team's win in final event the secured the first ever Griffin Games Trophy.
A huge thank you goes out to our ASB, our staff, and our students for making this an epic week of Griffin Greatness.
Warm regards,
Brandon Martinez

Griffin Mathematicians Participate in Math Day at the Beach 2016
Six of Los Al's top math students recently competed in the Math Day at the Beach competition hosted by Cal State University Long Beach. Teams of six students each from 35 high schools solve a range of math problems and earn points for their teams.
Students competed in the morning and then had a special lunch with a noted PhD making a presentation followed by a playoff between the top four finishers and then awards. Our students have been doing this yearly for about 10 years. Mr. McKee is the team's advisor and an alumnus of CSULB and is connected with a few professors at the university, including Dr. Merryfield, who works with talented high school students, and Dr. Kim, who is the math department chair. It is always fun to see extraordinarily talented students compete.
The Griffin Mathematicians who competed this year:
Minh-Thi Nguyen, Swetha Ramesh, Ariana Greer, Jeremy O'Sullivan, Jacob Rips, and Serena Kuhn.

11 Los Al Drama Students Pass Rigorous LAMDA Exam, Three Pass Gold Level
In February, our Drama students had the opportunity to take a LAMDA Exam. LAMDA is the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, and this exam is equivalent to an AP theatre exam. This is one of the most prestigious theatre schools in the world, and the exams have been around for over 100 years.
Our results came and we are pleased to share the following students and their achievement.

Los Al, Oak, and McAuliffe Hold First Ever String Social
The question was asked: why not host a social event to promote mentoring, bonding, and connection among incoming 9th graders (now 8th graders) and current LAHS orchestral musicians?
The music/orchestra program booster parents at LAHS, McAuliffe, and Oak took it and ran with it - reaching out to Mr. Harrell and Mr. Padilla to coordinate the event. It was a huge success, but would not have been so without the support and commitment provided by all three of these wonderful music teachers. We had a great turnout - nearly all 8th graders and the majority of the high school students attended.
We grouped students randomly by instrument and age and they had to work together within a short period of time to learn and play a simple song. Some kids even tried different instruments. Our hope with this event is that 8th graders will be inspired to continue with orchestra at the high school level and that the high schoolers will see how important it is for them to continue with the program and support it by giving back. We are so fortunate in LAUSD to have such talented, dedicated staff, students, and parents in our instrumental music programs.

Color Guard Storms to Semi-finals at World Championships in Dayton, OH
They're being called the "Little Guard that Could," because they are beating teams two to three times their size. However, as Band Director Mr. Plunkett said, "They perform big and with passion." As of this writing, the team had competed in opening rounds and quarter finals and needed a top 25 finish to make it to the finals. Congratulations to all of our Color Guard students for representing Los Al, showing Griffin Greatness and exemplifying what it means to #goCOLOSAL.
