LAHS Model United Nations Shine at the 64th Berkeley MUN

Several members of the Los Al Model United Nations Club traveled to U.C. Berkeley to compete in the 64th Berkeley MUN. As one of the top MUN competitions in the country that draws 
1,500 national and international students, the Griffin MUNs brought their A-game.  Congratulations to all MUN team members and a special shout out to the following students who received Outstanding certificates: Jack Sumner, David Gordon, and Rene Congdon, who received two certificates.

Los Al Students Participate in Mentor Breakfast

The tradition continues. Once again, the fabulous Counseling Department put on a fantastic Mentor Breakfast for Los Al students. College and Career Counselor, Mrs. Shelley Riekenberg, coordinated the event that featured over two dozen career and industry professionals who met with groups of students to discuss the real world nature of a range of professions. Topics included college and career pathways, realities of the professions, and the critical role of networking. The keynote speaker was the Mayor of the City of Long Beach, Dr. Robert Garcia, who spoke of his high school and college experiences as well as the impact his lifelong mentor has had on shaping his career. Thank you to PTSA for your support and Griffins Grill for providing the excellent breakfast.

LAHS History Club Scores Big at the So Cal History Bowl Championship

Congratulations to the LAHS History Club for taking 2nd place in the Southern CA History Bowl Championship held on 3/5/16 at UC Irvine. Jourdan Mendoza and Arianne Crosby, both Juniors went against Whitney, Troy, Woodbridge, and two teams from Arcadia. Los Al went undefeated (5-0) in the prelims. In the finals, Los Al went against Arcadia's A team with the score tied at 250 but the tiebreaker went to Arcadia. In the History Bee Individual Competition, Arianne Crosby took 1st place. In the finals, she went against two seniors from Arcadia and Whitney. 

Griffins Compete in O.C. Regional Science Olympiad at U.C. Irvine

The Los Al Science Olympiad Team traveled to U.C. Irvine this past weekend to compete in the Orange County Regional Science Olympiad. 28 high school teams from all over the county attended and competed in a variety of team and individual categories. Faculty Advisor Mrs. Lauren Helm said, "The team worked hard to prepare and I am pleased with how we competed." Biology teacher, Mr. Josh Lee attended as well and supported the team throughout the day. 

Los Al Jazz I, II, and III Ensembles Perform at the 43rd Annual Class Notes Concert 
The Tom Klubis Big Band headlined the 43rd Annual Class Notes Concert that benefits all the Jazz music programs in the Los Alamitos Unified School District. Several Los Al students were featured soloists and all three Jazz ensembles performed at the concert, which was held this past Saturday at Los Alamitos High School. Thank you to all supporters who attended.

Los Al Show Choir Dominates the Burbank Blast Competition

The Los Al Show Choir program took the Burbank Blast Competition by storm winning numerous accolades across all groups and divisions. Here are the big wins for the program: Soundfx--Grand Champs, Best Choreography, Music, and Show; Xtreme--Grand Champs, Best in Show and Music; Axcent--Grand Champs, Best in Show and Musicality; Soundtrax--1st Runner Up and Best Show; and Connexions--1st Runner Up. Jenna Lea Rosen was honored as Outstanding Soloist. Congratulations to all students who competed--your artistic talents are unparalleled.   

Los Al Teachers Collaborate, Create, and Explore During Staff Professional Development

Although it was a day off for students, Los Al teachers were busy working on lesson plans, student projects, and exploring cross-curricular opportunities with colleagues across departments.  This teacher-designed day afforded teachers to learn from each other and provided an opportunity for some teachers to share their work and ideas. As well, there were sessions offered on educational technology and new ways to integrate emerging technologies into instructional design and delivery practices. 

Los Al Harriers Represent at the Annual Race on the Base

Eli Manchester opened up the racing at the annual Race on the Base that raises money for a range of charities. The Los Al student is a part of the cross country team and showed what his hard work and efforts have done. Congratulations to Eli and all those who competed.
