Hour of Code 2015 Is Here!!!

We are excited to announce Hour of Code 2015.  This will take place Monday, 12/7 through Friday, 12/11.
What is it? Why do it? How do we do it? Where do we do it? These are likely questions you are asking.
What? A week during which there is a focus on introducing or exploring the concept and act of computer coding. (Coding is all around us: phone apps, computer games, websites, etc.) The goal is for students and their families to engage in at least one hour of coding during the week of 12/7 through 12/11.
Why? This is not just an event to do computer coding. It is a great opportunity for students to engage in higher order thinking, logic, and experience real world application of coding.
DID YOU KNOW?
  • There will be 1 million more computing jobs than students over the next 10 years (adding up to $500 billion in salaries)
  • More than 50 percent of all projected math and science occupations are in computing occupations.
  • Computing occupations are among the highest-paying jobs for new graduates. Yet fewer than 3% of college students graduate with a degree in computer science.
  • In 36 states, computer science classes don't count toward math or science high school graduation requirements.
  • A.P. Computer Science is taught in only 5% of U.S. high schools (LOS AL OFFERS AP COMPUTER SCIENCE!!!)
How? Visit the website www.losalconnects.com and watch the two (2) videos and then start to explore. If you are new to coding, start with any of the links in the Just Starting Out With Coding? section or for advanced coders, scroll down to the Getting Started with HTML, CSS, Java Script or to the Challenge Me sections. Spend an hour or so during the week of 12/7-12/11 working on one of the links posted on the www.losalconnects.com website.
Where? From anywhere you can get Internet access. Just click here or bookmark www.losalconnects.com to access the website. Also, the computer labs will be open after school everyday on campus for students to explore and talk and collaborate with other coders.
We welcome you and your student to join in this Los Al District Wide initiative and help our Griffins build 21st century skills, collaborate with friends, and learn more about the world in which they live.
Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball Teams Soar at Tourneys

Both the Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball teams participated in local tournaments this past week and weekend. The Lady Griffins were in the South Coast Holiday Classic and made it to the final vs. Mater Dei. The team fought hard and showed their skills, taking 2nd place in the tournament.

The Boys Team was in the Esperanza/Canyon tournament and just came up short making it to the championship game, falling to Long Beach Jordan by two points. However, the boys were relentless and dominated Servite High School in the 3rd Place game, winning by a score of 68-45!!!

Congratulations to both Varsity Basketball teams!!!

Japanese Students and Teachers Visit Los Al

This past week over 70 students and teachers from Numazu Central High School, located in Numazu, Japan, visited Los Alamitos High School. Students in the Los Al Japanese Language classes had the opportunity to participate in a cultural exchange, speak Japanese, and host students from the visiting school. Los Al Japanese teacher, Ms. Takeuchi, facilitated the visit and guided her students through a range of learning activities with the guest students. The visiting students enjoyed themselves and were impressed by Los Alamitos High School.
