Bon Voyage!  Los Al Heads To Paris Over Spring Break:
More Than 40 Griffins Made Their Way Around Europe This April, And They All Had A Blast!

Pictured above, a group of Los Al students pose in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris on a clear and beautiful day with chaperones, teachers, parents, and friends.

In what's become a yearly opportunity for Los Al students over the years, students can sign up for far-away trips to other countries and gain cultural experiences every Winter Recess, Spring Break, and Summer.

These trip opportunities are often sponsored by outside groups, have Los Al teachers as trip chaperones, can include parents who are interested in traveling, and provide incredible experiences for students to travel abroad with friends.  All in all, more than 100 students take advantage of opportunities to travel as a group each year, and all of them rave about the experience of being in a foreign country soaking up the sounds, views, food, and culture of places outside of North America.

Of course, students' schedules are usually full of all sorts of team sports, performing arts, or extracurricular endeavors... but if there's ever a reason to clear one's schedule and make some time for a one-of-a-kind experience with people that matter, traveling abroad is a wonderful opportunity to consider.  And one that students can avail themselves multiple times a year through various programs Los Al is associated with.  Safe travels!
Congratulations Mrs. Grimshaw!
You're The Winner Of The 2014-2015 Seal Beach Lions Teacher Of The Year Award!!!

Teacher. Mentor. Friend. Leader. Cultural Ambassador. Mother. Colleague. The list goes on and on when it comes to describing all the roles Mrs. Grimshaw plays in her duties at Los Al.  The bottom line for this year's Seal Beach Lions Teacher of The Year is that she's an amazing human being.  And for the last 20 years she's changed the lives of thousands of students, and kept relationships with almost all of them. Because she loves and cares about each of them very deeply and incredibly meaningfully.  And they absolutely love her right back.  Congratulations Mrs. Grimshaw!  You more than deserve this recognition and honor!!!

#VODUNKULARY:
Ever Wonder What Happens When A Bunch Of Word Empresarios Come To Visit Los Al?

A big shout-out should be given to all the teachers who were great sports and participated in last week's #VODUNKULARY vocabulary game during lunch behind the PAC.  Students and teachers all had a good time in the name of "word awareness" as we spun the Griffin Prize Wheel, answered some vocabulary questions across multiple subject disciplines, gave out free Prom Tickets, and got a little wet.  Thanks for being so up on your word game Los Al :)
Week 32, 2014-2015... IN THIS ISSUE:

Modeling Monday #4 Was A Smash Hit For Students... Check Out The Question Below!

Our final Modeling Monday of the school year has come and gone. Students and families have come to look forward to this math protocol once a quarter, and enjoy the task of figuring out these questions, both, individually and as a family :)

Students report that they understand that we are asking them to work in a new way and that mathematical thinking and strategies can and should be applied to open-ended questions. There is not always just one way to attack a situation.  There is not always just one exact answer to a problem. Math can be a topic to be debated and argued... imagine that!

This last question of, "Mom, can I drink all the water in the swimming pool?" focused on using the internet as a research tool as well as utilizing a "frame" to help organize the many components the prompt presented. What was unique to this problem was that students had the opportunity to make their own decisions about key elements of the question.  For instance, students chose how large their pool was (with sizes varying from a standard backyard pool, to a kiddie pool, to an Olympic-sized professional pool with thousands of gallons of water).  Students also chose how old the person in the problem was and how long they lived. They chose whether to use the recommended amount of water a person could drink in a sitting or a day versus the maximum amount. These variables influenced their final answer and nearly every group had some unique component to their work.

But that's real math!  The variables in life are constantly under consideration.  And the value of Modeling Monday is that it simulates problem-solving in a context that has real application.

Thinking about next year... If you have suggestions or recommendations on what math teachers should think about this Summer as they plan Modeling Monday pt. II, feel free to send them our way and we'll incorporate the feedback in all of our planning sessions.

Until then, may your Mondays be full of Modeling, and your math work full of conversation!
