ATHLETICS:  Spring Sports Ranked In TOP 10 In County, State, and Country!!!!

Now check this out, Griffins:  Los Alamitos High School had an incredible week of Spring Sports these last 7 days, as rankings were released in several polls. Boys Tennis just beat national power-house University High to gain a #1 Ranking In The County. Los Al Track boasts the State's fastest 1600 Boys & Girls Sprint Medley Teams in the State Of California.  And with so many Division 1 commits already, it's no wonder that Los Al Softball cracked the Top 10 in National Polls that came out earlier on Tuesday. The sun is out, the weather is warm, it must  be  time  for  some  Spring athletics:

The Power Of Our Instructional Networking Protocol:
More Than 30 Teachers Participated In This Week's Tech Rounds With Ms. Riegert!!!

Kendall Ostermann, Karen Yoshihara-Ha, and Jessica Riegert share an A-Ha! Moment during Instructional Networking Rounds in Ms. Riegert's room this week.

While teachers leading teachers through professional development series is becoming less and less foreign these days in American high schools, the degree of expertise and regularity in which Los Al teachers provide learning opportunities for their colleagues isn't really not the norm.

In fact, after 3 years of our version of Richard Elmore's Instructional Rounds model, our home-grown Instructional Networking protocol has quickly come to define a large part of our professional culture as its exemplifies TRUST, INNOVATION, CREATIVITY, GROWTH, and PREPAREDNESS --- all qualities we inherently value as teachers in our current context at Los Al.  As proof, look no further than the fact that every iteration of Instructional Networking has been well-designed and focused on student learning and teaching output.

Just taking a look at the menu of professional development opportunities we've participated in this year tells the story of how Instructional Networking's design has influenced each and every one of them:  Modeling Monday, Los Al Connects, Los Al Ed Camp, JED Talks, and who knows what else we'll think of next!
Teachers Teaching Teachers:
What's The Best Way To Learn How To Use GOOGLE DRAW?  From A Friend, Of Course!

That's Mr. Hart!  In this file photo, he's helping Ms. Grimshaw learn various applications for GOOGLE DRAW (a technology tool he just taught a group of Los Al teachers about 10 minutes before this picture was taken.)  By the looks on their faces, these two Social Science teachers are immersed in the possibility for student learning outcomes and teacher-created materials the world of GOOGLE DRAW offers.  Better yet, the spirit of collaboration can be seen all over this learning lab as teachers are working in teams to maximize their experience, and take the skills they're learning straight into the classroom the very same day.

Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments Are Now Here... And Los Al Is Leading The Way!
The reality of new state assessments is finally here, and teachers across the state are getting used to new acronyms like the ones featured above. Namely: SBAC.

State tests are now given on computers, and it's unlikely that we'll ever go back to paper and pencil anytime soon.  With this shift (not to mention new question-types and assessment paradigms) there is a clear need to support and train teachers, students, parents, and all the stakeholder groups of the Los Al learning community on exactly how California's new Test Operations Management System (TOMS) works.

FOR TEACHERS:  Many of you have been getting emails with tons of information in them (too much, really) about test-related topics like administering the exam, hand-scoring, length of time expectations for students, etc... To make things simple, Dan Bennet has created this 2-PAGE SIMPLE TEST ADMINISTRATION PACKET that can make things easy when it's time to give your Interim Comprehensive Assessment (ICA.)

FOR PARENTS:  One of the most impactful ways to understand how test administration is changing in the 21st Century is to actually take a state assessment yourself.  You'll experience the nuances of new question types and answer expectations and will be able to have deep conversations with your child about their experience with the new format as well.  To take a SMARTER BALANCED PRACTICE TEST, JUST CLICK HERE and hit "Sign In."  Select Grade 11, and then play around with as many test formats and questions that you have time for.

*****Remember, these tests count!  Scores and results are linked to the Cal State System's EAP Program (Early Assessment Program).  This means that students will take their Smarter Balanced Exams state exams in the Spring of their Junior Year in Math and English, and successful scores of "3" or "4" can exempt them from mandatory Freshman courses in the Cal State University system.  (Read More Here!)

In April, LAHS will be participating in the Every 15 Minutes program to raise awareness about the impact of driving drunk or impaired. Our student and staff production team is asking you to help as a community by sharing real-life stories. If you have lost a friend or loved one, or know someone injured or otherwise seriously affected by an impaired-driving vehicle accident, the team would appreciate hearing your story so that it can made part of the film at the heart of the program. This is a serious issue, and Los Al is committed to making a difference in the fight against drunk/impaired/distracted driving.

If you are comfortable sharing your story, please send us an email at the following address: lahs15minutes@gmail.com.
