ATHLETICS:   Los Al Advances To Semifinals In Boys Basketball On Tuesday!!!
If you didn't make the 55-mile trip down to Rancho Santa Margarita on Friday, no worries.  Our Griffins took care of business on the court and in the stands and there's plenty of evidence of the night's festivities on Social Media to go around!  We packed 6 Rooter Buses full of students and joined hundreds of parents and supporters in a game that was truly electric.  We'll be doing it all over again this Tuesday as Los Al takes on Great Oak High School on the road in Temecula.  Let's prove once again:

With Over 100 Teachers & Learners On Hand, Everyone Left With Lots Of Fresh Ideas

In the picture above, Lori Franzen leads a group of 6-12 teachers in the practice of conducting effective Socratic Seminars.  Ms. Franzen is an expert in this field.

Student Talk can be one of the most effective classroom outputs a teacher can expect from a learner.  Talking, qualifying, explaining, and questioning are all rigorous cognitive tasks that require students to make connections and prove with evidence as they further an idea, argue, or stake a claim.  Socratic Seminars can be an excellent way to foster Student Talk, but it's not as simple a practice as it sounds.  In fact, many teachers can become flustered with long periods of silence; and students sometimes "participate for participation's sake" when in the midst of a Student Talk mandate like a Socratic Seminar.  Luckily for Los Al, we have a growing number of expert practitioners skilled in the art of Student Talk.  So, whether it be through Instructional Rounds or Staff Development, feel encouraged to explore Socratic Seminaring soon!
Another Great Parent-Ed Night:
Internet Safety & Cyber-Bullying Took Center Stage With A Panel Of Experts In The PAC
Deputy Villa (left), and Officer Brandt (right) pose for a quick picture after giving a safety presentation to a room full of engaged parents from throughout the district. The evening's focus was on Cyber Bullying and Internet Safety.

For the past few years, Los Al has been working to get out in front of community health issues by holding Parent Education Nights that foster healthy dialogues and suggest strategies for parents to use when communicating with their children about safety.  This week's evening in the PAC was fantastic!!! So be on the lookout for our next event coming on March 9th!
Coming To Los Al On Monday, March 9th Is Our Survival Skills Seminar

In partnership with the Orange County Bar Association, Teenage Legal Survival Skills is an amazing program where two local lawyers will come and talk about what happens to teenagers'/students' rights and responsibilities once they turn 18 years of age and become "an adult."  The presentation is meant for students who have recently or will soon turn 18 years old. And it will be a great opportunity to ask real questions about life after high school.

If you know anyone who could benefit from this program please have them come out!

In April, LAHS will be participating in the Every 15 Minutes program to raise awareness about the impact of driving drunk or impaired. Our student and staff production team is asking you to help as a community by sharing real-life stories. If you have lost a friend or loved one, or know someone injured or otherwise seriously affected by an impaired-driving vehicle accident, the team would appreciate hearing your story so that it can made part of the film at the heart of the program.  This is a serious issue, and Los Al is committed to making a difference in the fight against drunk/impaired/distracted driving.

If you are comfortable sharing your story, please send us an email at the following address: lahs15minutes@gmail.com.
Week 25, 2014-2015... IN THIS ISSUE:

Catch Los Al Drama's New Show This Thursday & Friday!!!

Griffin Engineers Battle In Local Robotics Competition For Bragging Rights & More!!!
Check out our very own Griffin Engineers (above) Julio Cruz-Gomez, Alex Nguyen, Noel Limb and Dehwei Hsu of the Robotics Club competing in the 3rd Annual Vex Robotics Competition. They have spent months designing and creating the robot featured here, and according to club sponsor Mr. Reimer, "They all had a great time and learned a ton!"

Engineering, as a discipline, is getting more and more popular every year, and as tools and access become available on a larger scale, Los Al will be looking to expand its offerings in the area of Engineering.  Talk to your counselor about upcoming opportunities this Spring during Registration!

Student Sections Are About More Than Just Pride!!!

As This Season's Deep Playoff Run Continues To Prove, Student Sections Absolutely Matter In How Our Athletes Physically & Psychologically Respond During Games.
Keep It Up Los Al.  Just Two Rounds Left...
