THE SOCRATIC SEMINAR:
A Long-Established Instructional Practice Fits Well Into Today's Instructional Ethos

In the picture above, Lori Franzen leads a group of 6-12 teachers in the practice of conducting effective Socratic Seminars.  Ms. Franzen is an expert in this field.

Student Talk can be one of the most effective classroom outputs a teacher can expect from a learner.  Talking, qualifying, explaining, and questioning are all rigorous cognitive tasks that require students to make connections and prove with evidence as they further an idea, argue, or stake a claim.  Socratic Seminars can be an excellent way to foster Student Talk, but it's not as simple a practice as it sounds.  In fact, many teachers can become flustered with long periods of silence; and students sometimes "participate for participation's sake" when in the midst of a Student Talk mandate like a Socratic Seminar.  Luckily for Los Al, we have a growing number of expert practitioners skilled in the art of Student Talk.  So, whether it be through Instructional Rounds or Staff Development, feel encouraged to explore Socratic Seminaring soon!
Student Photo To Hang In College Board Headquarters:
Kennedy Faulkner Wins "Challenge All Students To Own Their Future" Contest

Out of over 800 entrants from across the country, Kennedy was selected as a $500 Scholarship Winner in The College Board's Annual Photo Competition.  Her work will hang in The College Board's NYC office for the next two years. Kennedy is in AP Photo.
16 SOFTBALL SCHOLARSHIPS AND COUNTING:
As Softball Season Begins, Check Out These Already-Amazing Accomplishments!!!
Los Al Softball has set a program record and currently have 16 of their 22 Varsity players either "verballed" or committed to Division 1 and 2 schools! Considering that less that 1% of all high school softball players nationally will get the opportunity to play at a Division 1 school, it is quite impressive that we have 13 on our roster.

In April, LAHS will be participating in the Every 15 Minutes program to raise awareness about the impact of driving drunk or impaired. Our student and staff production team is asking you to help as a community by sharing real-life stories. If you have lost a friend or loved one, or know someone injured or otherwise seriously affected by an impaired-driving vehicle accident, the team would appreciate hearing your story so that it can made part of the film at the heart of the program.  This is a serious issue, and Los Al is committed to making a difference in the fight against drunk/impaired/distracted driving.

If you are comfortable sharing your story, please send us an email at the following address: lahs15minutes@gmail.com.
Week 24, 2014-2015... IN THIS ISSUE:

The day starts at 8am, and educators will leave inspired and ready to enjoy the rest of their weekend by 12:30pm.  If you haven't Registered yet, CLICK HERE.  All tickets are free, and the learning is forever!!!

KING & QUEEN TAKE THEIR CROWNS:
Tom Lent And Tina Heeren Raise Beaucoup Bucks For Los Al Schools!!!
Congratulations to Tom Lent and Los Al's very own Tina Heeren for being crowned this year's King & Queen Of Courts!!!  The Queen Of Courts Spring Fundraiser is a donation campaign sponsored by LAEF (The Los Alamitos Education Foundation) that benefits all schools in the district.  Ms. Heeren was able to raise over $20,000 because of generous supporters to her campaign.  And at the King & Queen Of Courts Gala this weekend, it was announced that well over $100,000 was raised through this fundraiser for schools in total.  Absolutely incredible Los Al!  More money and resources for our students, schools, and extra-curricular programs!!!!
