According to Steve Fryer, "This gang of Griffins is organized, loud and funny. The two Edison-Los Alamitos games were great on the court and in the stands, because Edison has a good section, too." But #LOSAL prevails, and our students (all of them!) get the recognition they deserve.  Thanks to everyone for continuing to support all of our student-athletes!

LOS AL CONNECTS:
Designed By Teachers, For Teachers, Friday's Professional Development Was The Best Ever!

Check out the slideshow above for a wrap-up video of the entire day's collaboration. Additionally, there are images for download available at our FLICKR Account.

The first annual "Los Al Connects" took place at Los Alamitos High School on Friday, February 13, 2015. Over 200 teachers and administrators participated in professional development training in topics ranging from Close Reading strategies to POGIL to Cognitive Guided Instruction to Socratic Seminar. All of the over 25 workshops were presented by teacher from McAuliffe Middle School, Oak School, or Los Alamitos High School. Teachers were given a list of workshop opportunities in January and then registered online with their top choices for each session.

The morning began with a kick-off welcome from Superintendent Dr. Sherry Kropp. Teachers and administrators then proceeded to the first of their three hour-long workshops. At the conclusion of the morning sessions, all participants reconvened in the Performing Arts Center and debriefed before breaking for lunch. In the afternoon, teachers met at their home schools to meet with department members to share strategies from the morning trainings.

Because of the overwhelming positive response from our "teachers teaching teachers" model, we see Los Al Connects as the inaugural conference which will become an annual event.
SAT PREP Registration Begins This Week For Our Spring Class:
With Ms. Hart At The Helm, Juniors Prepping For The May Exam Are In Excellent Hands!
Click the image above for the same PDF Registration Form that will be passed out to Juniors this week at Los Al.  For questions about this class and other college matters, please contact Shelley Riekenberg in the College & Career Center for assistance.

To assist our Griffins in the college application process, we will be offering an SAT Prep Program geared specifically for Juniors planning on taking the May 2nd SAT Exam. (Typically, Juniors take their SATs for the first time in May, then SAT Subject Exams in June, and then SATs again in the Fall of their Senior Year.)

This preparatory class is designed to raise your child's score, and provide your student with the same exact strategies that leading SAT Prep companies charge over $1,500 for. And the best part is... we're only asking for a $90 donation to LAEF cover the up-front cost of facilities and materials!

This SAT Prep program will be filled up on a first-come, first-served basis. And class meets most Saturday mornings in Room 153/154, from 9am - Noon until the day of the test on May 2, 2015. All materials will be provided for FREE in the form of photocopies... However, if students would like to purchase the book we're using, we'll have it available every Saturday for just $20 during class. Its title is College Board's THE OFFICIAL SAT STUDY GUIDE, 2nd Edition, and it retails for $24.99 from Amazon.com and most major bookstores.

A HOUSE DIVIDED:
Los Al Teacher By Day / Marina Cheer Mom By Night, Ms. Loggins Knows Her Loyalties

Los Alamitos High School math teacher, Kim Loggins  and her daughter, Paige, have a Sunset League rivalry  on a daily basis. Kim has been a part of the Griffin  faculty for over twenty years. Paige is a senior at  Marina High School and a member of the Varsity  Cheer Squad. The two battled head-to-head last  Tuesday evening as the Griffins and Vikings met in a  Boys' Basketball contest at Marina High School. Los  Alamitos prevailed by a score of 71-57.

Rivalries between schools in athletics, or academics,  help to establish healthy competitive benchmarks to  gage success and continue motivation.  Los Al is  fortunate that throughout the Sunset League we face  excellent schools, with long-standing traditions of  achievement, that help us stay focused on whatever it  is we're competing for in Athletics or otherwise...

SHOW CHOIR SINGS WITH PATTI LUPONE!
Members of Los Al's Show Choir pose with Tony Award Winner Patti LuPone.  The students were invited to sing with her last week at The Annenberg Center in LA!  Ms. LuPone is best known for her work in stage musicals, including EVITA. She is a two-time Grammy Award winner and is also in the American Theater Hall of Fame.
