ATHLETICS:  Los Al knows how to ball.  Just check out our Hoops Teams this year!!!
Boys Hoops had an absolutely fantastic game against Edison this week, and if you weren't one of the 1,500 in attendance on the road, you missed out on a tough finish that saw Los Al lose their first League game in 2 years, 55-54.  Guess what though? Edison comes to Los Al on February 12th for the final League game of the season.  Our Griffins will be looking to avenge their loss, and the gym will be as packed as it's ever been:

LOSAL4LIFE:
Since Inception, This PBIS Initiative Has Given Away Over $5000+ In Gift Cards And Prizes!!!
Mr. Lopour interviews a student just before she spins the LOSAL4LIFE wheel.  During each monthly ceremony, PTSA helps sponsor close to $500 in prizes for kids!

PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) programs are a rising paradigm of support programs in schools right now.  They offer a proactive approach to culture building as opposed to a "Gotcha"-style of modifying student behaviors.

At Los Al, believing in this ethic as whole-heartedly as any school, we've taken it upon ourselves to custom-build a program that rewards students for the positive contributions they make to their classrooms and various whole-campus endeavors.

The biggest prize, of course, is our LOSAL4LIFE card, which allows a winner to get into ANY dance, athletic event, concert, etc. FOR FREE and FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.  That's what being LOSAL4LIFE means, after all... that you're connected as a living, breathing part of our school for as long as you walk the Earth.  We encourage our graduates and alumni to ongoingly support the efforts of the school, and in return, we're committed to continually developing students with the skills and competencies to make a difference in the world!
Puppets Are People Too!
Los Al Drama Does It Again With A Sock Puppet Performance Of Classic Fairy Tales :)
Pictured above, Los Al Drama's sock-puppet-version of LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD had audiences in an uproar.  The voices and costumes were none to be forgotten.

It's hard enough to put on a play when you can see the audience.  But what about when you're crouched down, hand in the air, talking like a Big Bad Wolf?

That's precisely what Los Al Drama students experienced when they put on their Sock Puppet Drama Showcase featuring fairy tales by The Brothers Grimm.  Already deep and moral in tone, our Drama students drew upon the rich lore and history of these texts and truly brought to life characters every child has interacted with in fiction at one time or another.  LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD, THE THREE LITTLE PIGS, JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, and even RAPUNZEL.  Every aspect of the show was an absolute joy to watch and behold.

College Day Is About More Than Just Connecting Students
At Los Al...
Teachers Get Just As Into College Day As Everyone Else Around These Parts!
Ms. Awad, Ms. Gur, Mr. Sells, and Mr. Torres all pose for a quick picture in their college gear during last Friday's Winter Sports Assembly that took place in the Gym.

There are studies that show that when high schoolers are asked "Who do you know in your life that graduated from college?" one of the least given answers is almost always "My teacher."

That's an interesting phenomenon, and one we'd like to change, as it's a fact at Los Al that every single teacher is college educated, and more than 53% of us have a graduate degree of some kind --- Master's or Doctorate.  But that data about student perception is powerful, and it suggests that high schools may not be doing enough to communicate that in every classroom, during every period of the day, every student is being taught by someone with a college diploma, and therefore lots of proven content area knowledge.

This is part of why we have College Day every month.  It's also why we have Door Signs that communicate our degree(s) earned and college alma mater.  At Los Al, our goal is that high school is not the end of our students' educational experience, but a springboard.  Whether it be college, career, military, or otherwise, all of our students' next step in life is going to require more of an education than they currently have.  College Day is just one way to help envision that future, and reinforce that there are fabulous mentors in all of our classrooms willing and able to share their experience applying, getting into, and graduating from a University.

College Day is for everyone at Los Al. And with so much spirit, and so many diverse post-secondary experiences from which to draw on, it's no wonder days like last Friday are so memorable and successful.
