The 21st Century Student:
Check Out The Infographic Below For Stats &
Figures On The Modern High-Schooler
In this interesting infographic compiled from data the NEA (National Education Association) acquired through various survey techniques, one can see some interesting trends about the habits and behaviors of our current generation of students. For instance, most students think school is "going great," and more than 80% of teenagers are part of at least one extra-curricular activity. With computers and mobile devices clearly impacting teaching, learning, and everything in between, it's interesting to consider the physical, social, and emotional health data indicated by this study and how intertwined all of these statistics are. Of course, America is a big and diverse country with lots of students of varied backgrounds. However you interpret this infographic, it's nice to put our school, students, and community in perspective and move forward more informed in the new year.

When Teachers Are Friends, Collaboration Comes Naturally...
Sure, Mr. Strong & Mr. Pixler May Be Geographically Separated On Campus, But Don't Mistake Their Collaboration... It's Tight!
Wearing companion sports/education-themed t-shirts to work, Mr. Strong (left) and Mr. Pixler (right) posed for a picture in Room 500 during some collaboration time.
Working together is a necessary component of teaching. Whether it's to get ideas or inspiration from someone else, perspective on an effective (or ineffective) practice, or to align assessment methods and student outputs, the work of great teaching simply cannot be done alone. To this end, Los Al is fortunate in promoting a culture of family amongst our staff. Just ask 1st and 2nd year teachers to Los Al Caley Strong and Josh Pixler. They don't collaborate because they have to... they work together because they want to. And they want to because they're friends :)

Be A Champion... Whether it's in the classroom, on the court, or for a cause, "being a champion" is a lofty goal that seems to fit the culture of Los Al perfectly. Whether it's applied to students, teachers, families, or community members, "being a champion" is about believing in something, helping and supporting others, demonstrating success, and sharing knowledge. Kinda' sounds like what being a Griffin is all about!
Contribute (A Verse, Perhaps)... We started the school year in 2014 by quoting Walt Whitman who wrote "That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse." We used this thinking to motivate our learning community to MAKE SOMETHING and inspire and move our students to change the world. In 2015, how could we strive for anything different?
Do Something... Actions speak louder than words. And sometimes, they speak so loudly that words aren't needed at all. May the new year move us to act. And to do. And may those actions make an impact on humanity and the future course our students and colleagues will set upon :)
Happy New Year Los Al!
