When Teachers Learn From Their Students...
Los Al's "Modeling Monday" Effort Allows For Teachers To Learn Just As Much From Their Students As Their Students Do From Them

Mr. Awad learns about "student talk" as he listens to the language Ms. Fox's Math students use to discuss a Modeling Monday question.  It's this kind of feedback loop that helps teachers get better at targeting instructional practices for their students.

Last month, Los Al High received more than 50 calls the day of our last Modeling Monday effort from parents, tutors, and neighboring school districts asking us to release the answer to our Modeling Monday question so that they could duplicate the experience.  While we appreciate the flattery, please know that teachers will always review the problem the next day in class with students, and we're committed to posting the questions online for public consumption --- either here, in this Memo, on the school website, or in Ms. Fox's To Infinity & Beyond publication. Hope U Enjoy!

Here's the problem...  King Arthur has a host of knights that sit with him at his grand round table, but not all of them are available all the time. Whenever he has a new quest for which he must send a knight, King Arthur has developed a favorite way to choose who gets to go on the adventure. King Arthur starts by having all knights who are present sit down with him at the round table. He then stands up and starts the selection process with the knight sitting directly to his left. King Arthur moves in a clockwise direction and says, "Yes," to that first knight, "No," to the second knight, then "Yes" to the next knight and continues around the circle in a pattern of "Yes-No-Yes-No-..." (Once a knight has been told "No" he leaves the table.) The selection process continues around the table until only one knight remains.

Sir Mathalot, a knight who's never yet been on a quest, wants to be this last knight at King Arthur's table so he can finally go on a great adventure. Where should Sir Mathalot sit so he is chosen regardless of the number of knights at the table?

Develop a rule, procedure or formula to help him choose the right seat.
