LOS AL WINS AP HONOR ROLL:
We're 1 Of 6 Districts In America To Increase AP Access & Success For 5 Years In A Row
We are not normal. And more importantly, our school has never strived or wanted to be among the status quo when it comes to student achievement. That's why Los Al is proud to announce that of the tens of thousands of school districts in the United States Of America, we are among 6 that have increased access to AP courses (we have over 900 students take 1,700+ exams each year) and simultaneously increased our students' Pass, or Success, Rate on the their AP exams (we currently have an 85%+ mark!)
What this means for our Griffins is that we're getting better and better at offering rigorous learning opportunities for students that we know they can be successful with. This is directly because of the caliber of our teachers, their dedication and commitment to AP success, and our ongoing training that supports teachers getting better and evolving their practice ongoingly.
This kind of success takes a collective vision, and if we keep believing that all students can be successful in rigorous AP courses with the proper preparation and identification, there's not telling what we can achieve!

ROP Child Development Students At Los Al Are Changing Lives Through Their Curriculum
Throwing a ball can be transformative to a young child. It teaches sharing, collaboration, cause and effect, and so many other critical life skills for children.
It's pretty much known at Los Al that you sign up for Child Development as much to impact the lives of young people as you do to impact yourself. This couldn't be more true for our current cohort of ROP Child Development students, as they are learning about their capacity to love and care for children each and every day they get to interact with our real-life Pre-school that exists on the very North side of campus. Whether it's throwing a ball, playing with dinosaurs, or feeding a hungry child, our high school students are well-equipped to make a difference in the lives of children and learn valuable skills that will make them marketable to child development employers looking for caregivers with experience and expertise. Fortunately for our students, the ROP Child Development program at Los Al is well known throughout the county for providing a premiere background for the professional work of teaching and mentoring young children in various settings. Once they graduate, our students get jobs everywhere and anywhere throughout The O.C.!

Where Are You On The SAMR Framework?
With A Big Week Of EdTech Presentations & Instructional Rounds, It's Good To Reflect On Your Technology Practice & Integration

Click the picture above to access Brandon Hart's and Dan Bennett's Technology Integration Presentation for teachers across multiple disciplines
The integration of technology into teachers' pedagogical philosophy and practice is both challenging and daunting. Positive and effective change is an evolutionary process, which is why at Los Al there is no expectation for forced technology use simply for the sake of technology. Instead, we're building a culture where learning goals are the primary objective inside classrooms, and technology is simply a tool or conduit for student achievement.
To help guide teachers' successful and effective integration of technology, our EdTech team suggests using the SAMR model as a framework. An acronym for "Substitution," "Augmentation, "Modification," and "Redefinition," this model helps teachers understand what's possible when taking full advantage of technology inside of a learning environment.
In advance of a big week of EdTech at Los Al (and our most popular Instructional Rounds offering ever), consider the SAMR framework and Technology Integration Presentation as resources meant to be a tool that helps in orienting our individual processes of integrating technology to achieve the greatest and most meaningful effect.
See you on Wednesday and Thursday for Tech Rounds with Mr. Farvour!

The BIOSPHERE Assignment:
Environmental Science Students Learn About Life (Literally) Through This Important Project

AP Environmental Science class helps students understand (and appreciate) the world in which they live. That's exactly what's happening in this photo... appreciation!
Life is complicated. Literally.
So to understand the scientific components of life, and how different living organisms coexist and interact with each other across our Earth, students at Los Al need to construct a Biosphere that actually works and allows different kinds of living things to grow and flourish while all depending on each other for survival.
The gist of the assignment is to is to design and build a sealed biosphere that will support a small population of animal life. In order to do this, students need to understand concepts about Trophic Levels (balancing producer, consumer, and decomposer populations), Food Webs (keeping animal life alive), and Biogeochemical Cycles (nitrate, phosphate, carbon dioxide, and pH levels in the biosphere).
Pretty rigorous, right? But also a direct application of learning to help understand the world in which we live.
