.............. Unlimited Possibilities!
Dr. Kropp's State Of The District:
And It's Full Of Unlimited Possibilities For Students, Staff, And Community Supporters!
Wearing her "Go Los Al" pin, Dr. Kropp stands in front of a group of hundreds at The Eagle's Nest last Thursday to deliver great news about the state of our district.  From student achievement to national recognition, things are going wonderfully in Los Al!

All of us involved directly with our school district know how healthy and positive our culture of excellence is.  After all, we're part of our students' growth and success as we work with them daily to maximize their achievement in school and throughout everything they endeavor to try in life.

Still, yearly State Of The District addresses help unify the work we each do at our school sites.  And for community stakeholders, learning about the Los Al's successful initiatives strengthens our relationships, and helps to highlight how integral our community is to the overall achievement of our students, teachers, and individual schools.  All around, in fact, this year's State Of The District highlighted the power of this context.

Indicative of the role we all play in Los Al's success, this year's State Of The District was filled with voices representing all aspects of our district's goals.  From Congressman Alan Lowenthal, to Teacher Of The Year Justin Padilla of Oak Middle School, to Los Alamitos Education Association Richard Smith, it's clear that the strength of Los Al is within the diversity of our people and their dedication to kids!
Parent Ed Night Rocked!
A Well-Attended Presentation Brought Students & Families Together Around Safety
Deputy Rodriguez (left), Deputy Barke (middle), and Officer Brandt (right) pose for a quick picture after giving a safety presentation to a room full of 300+ parents and students.  The evening's focus was on Vapor Pens, E-Cigs, and Prescription Meds.

For the past few years, Los Al has been working to get out in front of community health issues by holding Parent Education Nights that foster healthy dialogues and suggest strategies for parents to use when communicating with their children about safety.  Be on the lookout for our next event coming later on this Winter!

Teacher Talk Helps Our Students Learn:
During Their Last Instructional Rounds, Science Teachers Dissected Their Practice...
In this file photo, AP Environmental Science teacher Gordon MacDuff talks shop with his colleagues about his own instructional practice.  He then uses the feedback, validation, or introduction to new teaching methodologies to evolve his own repertoire of instruction.  It's the discourse amongst colleagues, though, that fuels this process.

Instructional Networking at Los Al is nothing more than a conduit for great teachers to talk and observe other great teachers for the purpose of reflecting and evolving.  On its own, the protocol is pretty simple --- watch a lesson, or be watched, with a couple of friends and colleagues, and set some time to debrief the experience shortly afterwards.  That's where the magic happens :)

Last month, in the Science Department, teachers broke down close reading strategies and considered upcoming shifts in text complexity as the Next Generation Science Standards get ready to roll out around 2016. It was the conversation, not the observation, that shifted thinking and sparked meaningful discourse.

Teachers getting together to talk is as simple a strategy as there is for increasing student learning.  The beauty of it, of course, is that it works every time!
Annotating Everything!
Across The Content Areas, Contextualizing Content Is A Helpful Strategy
Here are two copies of EAST OF EDEN from two different students in Ms. Parson's English class.  Clearly, they've infused their own perspective and experience into the their reading this iconic novel.

Annotating text is not just about "taking notes," it's about making the experience of reading deeper and richer, and enhancing the words on the page with context and background.

Wanna see an example?  GENIUS.COM is a website dedicated to "annotating the world," and they're a great resource for students and teachers to access for the purposes of making or taking advantage of annotations of text.  In this example, the first Chapter of EAST OF EDEN is available for annotation, and you can see just how important annotating can be to enhancing the overall meaning of a work.
