ATHLETICS:  Fall Sports are now just about in the thick of things, and we encourage everyone to come out and cheer on their friends as they compete with the county's best for League and Division Honors.  For those interested in our highly-ranked Hockey Team, games are often played on Saturday afternoon and evenings at Anaheim Ice, and are usually FREE to attend.  (For a complete Ice Hockey schedule, click HERE.)  X-Country also runs their meets on many weekends, so there's tons of Los Al sports to cheer for once Saturday and Sunday come up on the calendar.  Other sports, like Boys Water Polo, are playing Tournament games throughout most of September, fine tuning their skills and getting ready for league matches in October.  Last Friday night, our Boys Polo club took it to Coronado of San Diego in a thriller!  Down 7-3 at half, Los Al outscored their opponent 8-2 in the 2nd Half and Overtime for the win!

Top 100 High Schools In USA:
With Our Highest National Ranking In School History, Los Al Is Among The Nation's Elite...
Los Al Staff Members pose for what's becoming an annual picture in front of the large granite "Los Alamitos High School" sign at the very front of campus this week.

Rankings aren't everything... And neither are test scores.  But when things like this get published, they do seem to validate all the creativity, innovation, and effort that goes into making Los Al what it is each and every day for our students and families.

The 2014 Newsweek High School Rankings came out this week, and Los Al now ranks in the TOP 100 OF ALL HIGH SCHOOLS IN AMERICA.  (For a full list of rankings,  CLICK HERE.)

The rankings highlight the best 500 public high schools in the nation - those that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads. The list is based on many components: graduation rate, college acceptance rate, AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student, average SAT/ACT scores, average AP/IB/AICE scores, and percent of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course.

Considering this a total K-12 effort, congratulations goes to all for their dedication and commitment to serving our students as best as possible.
Welcome To Spanish Class, With A Twist!
In This Opening Week Activity, Students Lead Blindfolded Peers Across Campus Using Only The Language They're Studying In Class
These two Griffins aren't re-enacting a challenge from the CBS hit reality show SURVIVOR... they're learning how to speak in a foreign language.  And it's working!

Stop me if you've heard this one before...

You're walking from the bathroom back to class, maybe, and you see some friends that you know also roaming through the quad.  They look lost, so you kinda' shout to say "Hi" to them, but they don't respond.  They just keep walking.

You say "Hi" a little bit louder now as you get closer, but your so-called-friends seem to ignore you.  Then you notice that one of them is blindfolded.
And then you realize they're only speaking Spanish to each other.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the World Languages Department.

From hallways that smell that like fine-dining restaurants on cultural potluck days, to paintings and artifacts from countries that span all across the globe, to two friends taking turns blindfolding each other and trying to get around on the very campus they know like the back of their hand, the World Languages Department is constantly coming up with fun and creative ways to teach students more than just how to speak another language... but how to respect, understand, and immerse one's self in another culture as well.

Adios!  Au Revoir!  Sayonara!

History Classes Use Patriot Day To Teach Important Lessons:
From "Remembrance" To "Heroism," Looking Back At 9/11 Shows Us All About America
An email from the History Department circulated teachers' Inboxes last week as amazing resources and lesson ideas were shared to help students get the most out of Patriot Day.  (The video above, and it's accompanying Lesson Plan, was perhaps the most used and shared.)

It's important to remember that our current cohort of students were anywhere from 4 years-old at the time, to not even born yet when the events of September 11, 2001 took place.  We have a responsibility to recognize the totality of this day and remember it for all that it was.  At Los Al, this absolutely happened last week.
Why This ASB President (And All ASB-ers) Are Reading Jim Collins' GOOD TO GREAT
Leadership Is About More Than Just School Spirit & Winning Campaigns At Los Al...
That's Ziad.  He's reading a book normally purchased and read by millionaire CEO's and up-and-coming entrepreneurs.  He wants to learn what they learn... Good idea!

This year's ASB is trying something different.

For the first time in, maybe, ever, the class convenes once a week to complete an hour-long book study as part of their class and overall leadership development.  The first book on their list is Jim Collins' GOOD TO GREAT, and ASB Advisor Keely Hafer is taking them through the work much like an English teacher would.

The results so far are promising.  "Students are absolutely loving, not only, the content of the book, but the fact that they're getting the chance to read such a sophisticated work so early in their quest to be leaders," Hafer said.

A book about how to make something that's already great even greater.,,

Sounds like Los Al to me!
