You're Gonna' Love NAVIANCE!
A One-Stop Shop For All Of Your College & Career Planning While At Los Al
Naviance Family Connection, which is used from Freshman until Senior year, creates an online portfolio of your child's interests, strengths, and experiences, culminating in a post-secondary plan that outlines their goals upon graduation.

As freshman, students take the first step in post-secondary planning-getting to know themselves. They complete inventories that assess their learning styles and personality types. The results are comprehensive, giving students an in-depth explanation of their strengths and their potential blind spots, as well as possible career choices.

As sophomores, students take the next step in post-secondary planning-uncovering their interests and skills. Sophomores take a career interest inventory and a quiz that determines what career clusters they may be interested in.  Given that students' interests often change and develop, students can retake these interest inventories at any time.

In their junior year, students begin the college search process. The Naviance program is an invaluable tool that streamlines the research process, allowing students to use GPAs, test scores, and potential majors or careers to find schools that match their needs. Students can conduct an in-depth search for schools by location, size, religious affiliation, academic programs, athletics, competitiveness
(in admissions), racial diversity and cost. Naviance will give profiles of most colleges, including admissions requirements, deadlines, tuition cost, financial aid information, and an overview student life. Tools on Naviance also allow students to compare their GPA and test scores with the average GPAs and test scores of other Los Al students that were accepted at particular schools. This allows students to
see if they have a viable list of potential colleges. At this time, students who may be entering the workforce after high school can also use Naviance to update
their resumes and search for potential careers.

As seniors, students will use the Naviance program to apply to the schools of their choice. Seniors at Los Al can use Naviance to request teacher recommendations and link their Naviance account to their Common Application account. This process allows the Counseling  Department to send all of the students' information electronically.  During this time, as well, students headed into careers post-secondary may use Naviance to update and print out their resumes for employers or other organizations.

Naviance Family Connection is a valuable tool for post-secondary planning.  By the end of their senior year, students will have created an online portfolio highlighting their plans upon graduating. We encourage parents to become familiar with the system and support their children's endeavors through Naviance.

A Real Robe For A Real Expectation!
In At Least One Los Al Classroom, Students Are Constantly Reminded Of The End-Goal...
That's a real Graduation Gown once worn by a Los Al student upon graduating. The cool thing is that it stays on the wall of Ms. Weis' room for students to see all day!

High school is about many things...
Making memories, having fun, learning new concepts, and getting prepared for the "real world."  But most of all, it's about GRADUATING.  It's about getting a diploma and culminating 13 years of formal schooling.  It's about finishing this goal and being able to walk around for the rest of one's life with the skills and experiences to be successful.

That's why on the first day of school this year, Ms. Weis greeted all of her new students at the threshold of her classroom wearing a Graduation Gown and shaking their hand.  Then, as students took their seats, they saw that there would be a Graduation Gown constantly staring them in the eye each and every period --- Ms. Weis had affixed one to the wall with the words "discipline," "hard work," and "determination" stapled directly onto the gown.

What Ms. Weis knows is that even though it can sometimes be taken for granted that a student will graduate from high school, there are undoubtedly challenges along the way that will prove difficult for students to endure.  When that happens... when the going gets tough... she wants her students to focus on the end-goal, Graduation, and rise to whatever expectation is needed to accomplish this task.

You may think it's cheesy to come to school wearing a Graduation Gown on a hot August day... but it shows students we care about them.  That we're willing to do something odd or uncomfortable so that they learn and "get the point."  It shows students we love them and care about their success.  And believe me, each and every time they look at that gown on the wall, they appreciate it :)

Thanks Ms. Weis!
