Welcome To The MONDAY MORNING MEMO!
Usually Sent On Sunday Night, By The Way...
Famous for all sorts of achievements, Los Al publishes a Monday Morning Memo that's quickly become the preeminent communication tool for O.C. high schools.

WHAT IS THE MONDAY MORNING MEMO?

At it's core, the Monday Morning Memo is simply a communication tool.  It's a weekly newsletter that unifies the experiences, accomplishments, and values of our high school community so that everybody knows what's going on with everyone else.  At a school our size, connectivity is an invaluable resource!

WHO READS THE MEMO?

Good question!  When it first started in 2012, the Memo was only distributed to Los Al teachers.  Then, about half-way through that year, some parent groups became interested in the Memo.  By the start of the 2013 school year, the Monday Morning Memo was distributed to over 5,000 teachers, families, and even students wanting a weekly perspective on what's going on at Los Al.  Today, the Memo serves a national audience and boasts a membership over 30,000 strong.  Educators from around the globe subscribe to the Memo to learn about our school's culture, immerse themselves in our practices, and share in some of our thinking.  And, we even have some pretty important subscribers to boast of... For example, did you know that current Secretary Of Education Arne Duncan is a Monday Morning Memo subscriber?  Pretty cool!

WHAT THE MEMO ISN'T...

While Los Al's Memo has been known to cover a wide variety of topics, it is by no means an "OFFICIAL RECORD" of any kind.  That is to say, the Memo is not a sports archive, or an official collection of school statistics.  The Memo lists only a certain number of calendared events each week, and it's literally written by one person (usually on Sunday afternoons) while two little kids are running around the house crawling all over the place :)

In short, there are sometimes mistakes, typos, or a missed date for an event from time to time... but all things considered, I hope you like it and find it useful!

This Is For People Who Like Words

As someone who loves words, like many of you, I think students, teachers, and families alike will get a kick out of these visuals, and maybe even want to use pieces of it in classroom or dinner-time discourse throughout the year.

McDonald's & Math:
In The Common Core Math Class, Students Talk About Real-World Problems & Apply Conceptual Frameworks To Solve Them
In a pretty cool lesson by the folks at Mathalicious.com (click the link picture above for details), students are tasked with the procedural objective of simplifying calories/minute exercise equations while they simultaneously tackle the conceptual question of "Does posting calorie information at fast-food restaurants really change behavior?  Why or why not?"

Once upon a time, Math classes were known for lots of chalk and lots of numbers.  Fast-forward to today's math classroom (particularly at Los Al), and students and teachers can be found talking, debating, laughing, and watching videos.

"Math?" You say...

Indeed it is.  Just think about the McDonald's Question asked above.  Instead of just calculating calories to exercise ratios, the true task of the assignment is to figure out if calorie posting is even making a difference in the way people choose their food.  And, if it's not, is there a more effective way to change the dieting behavior of human beings in today's information-rich society?

Answers to questions like these can come in paragraph form in the 21st century math class.  Of course, students still need the concepts, skills, and procedural mastery requisite to be swift and adept at deriving a solution... but without asking BIG questions with multi-pronged answers and more than one viable outcome, students won't be able to firm up their knowledge in a way that successful college an career goals ultimately demand.
