Senior Award$ Night:
With Over $1,000,000 Going To Our Seniors, Senior Awards Night Was One For The Ages!
Hundreds of Seniors received scholarships and recognition at last week's Senior Awards night. And they'll be wearing Graduation "bling" to prove it on June 12th :)
From the scholarship valued at $450,000 from West Point, to myriad cash scholarships ranging in value from $500 to $10,000+ from community partners such as the Rossmoor Homeowners Association, Republican Women's Federation, the Jim Cross Memorial Foundation, and many more... it is estimated that more than $1,000,000 was awarded to the Graduating Class Of 2014 --- a distinction that all of Los Al is proud of considering the contributions of this year's sensational class.
Organized by the Counseling Team of Los Alamitos High School, last Thursday's Awards Night featured scholars, athletes, and humanitarians of all kinds. Teachers and counselors came on stage to recognize and introduce Senior recipients, and parents and friends cheered loudly at the announcement of each award.
The evening culminated with the official announcement of this year's Valedictorians as they received medallions to wear on Graduation Day. Congratulations to Benjamin Yeh, Christopher Yeh, Lyn Stoler, Le Wen Chiu, Timothy Chou, Drew Gomberg, Justin Paek, Audrey Choi, Lindsey D'Arnaud, and Shelby Edmondson.
We'll see all the Seniors on June 12th for their last day of high school... ever!

Learning Is Doing:
Mr. MacDuff's Students Raised White Sea Bass In Order To Free Them Into The Wild... How Amazing Is That?!?!!?
Mr. MacDuff's students travel to Huntington Harbor to release White Sea Bass into the wild and stock the food chain as part of a real-life learning experience.
Ninety-day old white seabass arrived at Los Alamitos High School in early March as part of a project in conjunction with Scientists from Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) and Get Inspired! Inc. On May 21st, 2014, the students released the cultured white seabass (WSB) near Huntington Harbor to help restore depleted fish stocks. The students raised the juvenile WSB in Mr. MacDuff's classroom as part of the activity "Seabass in the Classroom" along with the Orange County Ocean Restoration Project with Get Inspired.
In partnership with HSWRI and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Get Inspired brings a hands-on ocean-based learning experience into the classroom and couples it with field activities related to the release of fish. The program teaches the students about aquaculture and stock enhancement by growing the fish for release into the ocean. This is the only program of its kind in the U.S. While there are other projects that raise fish in the classroom, they are freshwater species. Marine species are more difficult to culture and provide the linkage to the ocean that is important and appropriate for Southern California youth. It allows young people to participate in a marine replenishment program that has been operating since the mid-80s. The program helps them not only gain a better understanding of where their food comes from but it also addresses all related aspects associated with sustainability including 1) the health of the oceans; 2) California agriculture; 3) food production technology; 4) the health benefits of eating seafood; and 5) food security. The students are learning about the sustainability of a natural resource through the practices of environmental science, and the importance of water quality as a factor in animal, plant, and human health.
Learning is doing... and these Los Al students have really made a difference in the world.

Pick A Topic, Any Topic:
10th Graders Show Off Their Multi-Genre Research Projects To Any And All...
In a packed Media Center, 10th graders and their English teachers show off their Multi-Genre Research Projects and look for feedback and evaluation from peers.
There's a difference between being assigned something to research and having the freedom with which to choose something you're interested in....
This is the exact rationale that guides 10th grade English teachers as they allow their sophomores to choose any topic of study and present it to an audience using the style and tone of multiple genres of writing.
The results are incredible. Complete ownership of each topic is achieved by every student as they are the ones that chose their particular course of study. From explications of the origins of Japanese Animè, to the cultural implications of Route 66, to topics so specific you have to see them to believe and appreciate them, this assignment epitomizes the democracy of choice-making that goes into being a life-long learner, and it's a blast for our entire community to participate in.

Back-To-Back:
Class Of '14 Wins Los Al's Annual Powderpuff Football Game for 2nd Time In A Row!
The Annual Los Alamitos High School Powderpuff Game is serious business to all...
The Juinors and Seniors of Los Al this year took last week's Powderpuff Football game pretty seriously. After all, the Class of 2014 had a chance to become the first back-to-back champions ever in the history of this storied tradition.
Appropriately, each team designed jerseys to identify their teammates, and the rivalry on campus lasted all week as Los Al Griffin Football Players (who are the coaches for their respective class' teams) worked with their Powderpuffers to stay mentally strong heading into the big game.
With a final score of 6-0 on a touchdown by Dakota Collins, the Senior Class of 2014 did, indeed, become 2-time champions of Los Al's Annual Powderpuff Bowl!
The game was played cleanly and was refereed fairly, and both Juniors and Seniors should be proud of the legacy they're leaving for the next round of Powderpuffers to build upon in the years ahead.
