ATHLETICS:  Congratulations to Los Al's Roller-Hockey Team on an incredible season.  We finished second place overall after falling 6-5 in overtime on Sunday in the Championships, but all of our players and families couldn't be more proud of how the team played all season long!  Enjoy the off-season, and we'll see you next year!

Also in sports and activities news, Cheer continues to dominate in competition!
In what may be one of the longest seasons of all sports, Los Al Cheer continues to compete across the counrtry and represent the very best of what Los Al is all about. Their daily practices on campus are know by everyone who's ever walked the back side of Los Al between the hours of 1:30pm and 5pm.  These girls literally practice all afternoon long, every day, until their routines are perfect.  And what's more, their execution is top-notch! With bodies flying all through the air, the precision with which our cheer team runs its routines is truly a site to behold.  So, if you haven't seen them compete yet, hurry up and catch a glimpse.  They're fantastic!

The Many Faces Of Teaching & Learning:
Oh, The Faces We Make When We Teach And Learn, And Everything In Between!

The learning process is written on our face most of the time.  The same goes for teaching.  From smiles to puzzlement, we all react when we're learning...

Learning, by definition, is the acquisition of new knowledge.  While this is most comfortably done when there is no "old knowledge" to replace, often learning turns out to be the replacement of old knowledge with newer, more relevant, and accurate knowledge.

As such, people make funny faces when they learn.  Just as when they teach...

The face we make the most when we're really learning is a toss-up between a smile and a look of bewilderment.  The smile is for the "easier" kind of learning, new knowledge acquisition where none existed before.  The bewilderment is the more complicated variety of learning... changing and shifting old notions for newer and better ones.  Either way, the process is written on one's face.

At Los Al, these looks are common are commonplace in the classrooms of every discipline across campus.  From smiles and laughter, to puzzlement and disagreement, the learning process is in constant motion at our school.  If anything, it's that blank stare that teachers should be most concerned about when it comes to a student's facial cues...

After all, we want them reacting in some way to the learning task at hand :)

In The News:
Mr. Haygood's "News Wall"
Houses Every Article About Los Al That's Ever Been Written... Ever
If you haven't seen it already, the wall in Mr. Haygood's room is home to every article that has ever been written about Los Al since the course of human history began approximately 5,000 years ago...

OK, maybe Mr. Haygood's wall doesn't have every single article ever put to print about Los Al, but it sure does have most of them.  In what started as an homage to the school he's loved and worked at for almost 20 years, Mr. Haygood now collects these artifacts for more than just himself.  Dozens of students flock to this AP Calculus room to read up on the latest Los Al news, or catch a glimpse of a photo of themselves or a friend they didn't realize was even published.

Even in the age of digital media, there's something about the printed word that carries so much weight... Thanks, Mr. Haygood for keeping this tradition alive!
Ready To Blow Your Mind?
A New App Helps You Read 200% Faster Than Ever Before... Check It Out!
This is absolutely incredible. I just read MOBY DICK on my Kindle in 2 hours!!! Imagine what else is possible when reading is this fast and easy for everyone...

EXCERPTED FROM ELITEDAILY.COM...

"The reading game is about to change forever.

Boston-based software developer Spritz has been in "stealth mode" for three years, tinkering with their program and leasing it out to different ebooks, apps, and other platforms.

Now, Spritz is about to go public with Samsung's new line of wearable technology.

Other apps have offered up similar types of rapid serial visual presentation to enhance reading speed and convenience on mobile devices in the past.

However, what Spritz does differently (and brilliantly) is manipulate the format of the words to more appropriately line them up with the eye's natural motion of reading.

The "Optimal Recognition Point" (ORP) is slightly left of the center of each word, and is the precise point at which our brain deciphers each jumble of letters.

The unique aspect of Spritz is that it identifies the ORP of each word, makes that letter red and presents all of the ORPs at the same space on the screen.

In this way, our eyes don't move at all as we see the words, and we can therefore process information instantaneously rather than spend time decoding each word.

The game has changed. Try it for yourself."

Another Los Al Tradition:
Mr. Kennedy's Class Is The Place To Be On St. Patrick's Day!

Click this picture above, and you'll see the same video Mr. Kennedy played for his class this St. Patrick's Day.  It's a highlight reel of all the amazing culture and history his native Ireland has contributed to the world...

For more than a decade, "leprechauns" have broken into Mr. Kennedy's room the weekend before St. Patrick's Day and decorated it with all things Irish.  From tinting the light fixtures green, to hanging potatoes, to U2 albums playing on repeat through the sound system in the room, students (excuse me, "leprechauns") go all out in what has become a Los Al tradition.

The best part:  Mr. Kennedy's students get to learn a some insider history on Ireland from their teacher who was born and raised there.
