The Adventures Of Flat Griffin!
A Summer Slide Show... Los Al Style
Click The Video Above To See Where "Flat Griffin" Went This Summer
When the 2012 - 2013 school year ended just a few months ago, many of us had no idea just how far our FLAT GRIFFIN PROJECT would take us.
Now, with over 100,000 miles logged, and the pictures and wear-and-tear to prove it, "Griffy" is back home safe and sound at Los Alamitos High School... for now.
The truth is, our little FLAT GRIFFIN PROJECT was actually an exercise in collaboration. One person taking one "Flat Griffin" on a trip and snapping some photos is simply not as impactful as hundreds of people taking hundreds of "Flat Griffins" to myriad locales, both, close and far from home.
The same is true in our classrooms, in college, and in the careers that we're preparing our students for. Collaboration works! And it matters! So as much time as we spend developing the individual skills of our students through focused learning tasks and deep and rigorous course objectives, it's also critical that we foster their ability to work with others, and furthermore, that we create systems and pathways in our classroom that facilitate creativity and innovation on a larger scale than focusing on individual talents alone.
As evidenced by our FLAT GRIFFIN VIDEO, beautiful things happen when people are trusted with a kernel of an idea and take it in directions some would never have even dreamed of.
Here's to a year of infinite joy and unlimited possibilities!

Mr. Vlasic's New Positive Behavior Program Rewards Los Al Students With Gift Certificates & More....
This year @ Los Al, when a 4th Period teacher nominates a student for demonstrating one of our school's Graduation Goals, their name will be entered into a lunchtime raffle where they can earn a chance to spin our new Griffin Prize Wheel for Gift Certificates, Free Yearbooks & Dance Tickets.
If they're lucky... students can win the ultimate prize: a "LosAl4Life Card" --- entitling the owner to FREE ADMISSION to every on campus activity @ Los Al... FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES!!!!
In an office sometimes stigmatized for being the place where students receive discipline, consequences, accountability, and the like... Mr. Vlasic is seeking to reward students for their behaviors throughout the school year --- both, inside and out of the classroom.
The LosAl4Life program is a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention & Support) initiative focused on strengthening the relationships between students and multiple elements of the school. With 4th period teachers as the nominators, EVERY SINGLE STUDENT will have access to the program, and since no student can win twice in a single school year, there will be multiple opportunities to demonstrate how LosAl4Life one is throughout each semester.
Here's a look into the process:
The nomination form to the right allows space for teachers to write narratives explaining the positive behavior demonstrated by a student that caused them to be recognized. The Supervision Office will tabulate these Nomination Forms monthly and post the names of all Raffle Entries on the outside of their office a week before the event. Parents will be notified of their child's amazing accomplishment, and family and friends will be invited to attend the lunchtime raffle where students have a chance to spin the Griffin Prize Wheel. We'll try and hold these events on the last Friday of every month, and will be in full communication about any adjustments to the schedule that may need to be made.
Please use LosAl4Life as a tool in the classroom to reward students for the character they display during class and around campus.
We have an amazing student body with tons of talent and ability, and this program will be a great opportunity to recognize them for something other than academics.

A MASTER CALENDAR FOR EVERYONE!!!
Above, your looking at a screenshot of Los Al's new publicly viewable MASTER CALENDAR. To view it, just visit http://losal.tandemcal.com
With a school our size, and a campus this bustling, it's pretty much a necessity to know what's going on, when it starts and ends, and where it's located 24 hours a day.
Well, now you can!
In partnership with TandemCal.com, Los Alamitos High School is now using a publicly-viewable MASTER CALENDAR that will make viewing, scheduling, and planning for events an absolute cinch!
We're looking forward to another year of jam-packed activities every day of the week. So if you're a Club Advisor, Booster Parent, Coach, or Community Member, using the new calendar system should be a great benefit to support you in having a top-notch event!
The technology of this system is truly spectacular!

Got S.W.A.G.?
Dr. Gates Will Give Your Students Free Gear And Throw Them A Party If They Do!!!!
How easy is this...
If EVERYONE in your 1st Period class shows up EVERY DAY and ON TIME for 10 days in a row, they win free t-shirts, sweaters, hoodies, or knapsacks! And if it happens multiple times in a semester, we'll throw them a lunchtime party with free food and drinks for everyone! This is the exact incentive structure for SWAG (Students With Attendance Goals). As part of Los Al's initiative for rewarding students for positive behavior, the Attendance Office has structured a 1st Period attendance program aimed at reducing the amount of 1st period absences and tardies scoolwide, thereby keeping students in school longer, more consistently, and ultimately increasing their overall achievement. As a teacher, this program should be a helpful tool to help mitigate 1st period absences and tardies, and will be particularly useful every time your class begins a somewhat lengthy streak of 100% attendance. (One can imagine little pep talks here and there to a cohort of students like, "We've just made our 7th day of 100% attendance!!! Great job everyone... Only 3 days left! You can do it!") At the same time, this program structure should also reduce the amount of times a student walks in 2 minutes late with a cup of Starbucks in one hand, and a toasted bagel in the other... Wait --- that never happens. Nevermind. All in all, SWAG is simply designed to REWARD the positive behavior of our students and increase the amount of time they spend learning in school. There are no punitive aspects to this program whatsoever :) So, let's see who can do it! Who will be the first to demonstrate their class' SWAG? Which class will have the highest attendance in the school? Remember, free t-shirts and lunchtime parties for those who hit the 10-consecutive-days mark... Teachers included!

Los Al Has A School Resource Officer (SRO):
And His Name Is Detective Brandt
Pictured above, Los Al's new School Resource Officer (SRO) Detective Brandt is all smiles as he refamiliarizes himself with Los Al --- a place he attended when he was in school just a few years back...
"It's my dream job," Detective Brandt said when asked about how he felt about becoming Los Al's new SRO.
Once a student at Los Al and Laurel High School, Detective Brandt is already familiar with many of the realities of being a high school teenager in our community. His role for the next year will be to support students and families as they make healthy choices in their school and home lives.
You can expect to see Detective Brandt roaming the campus before school, during passing periods, at lunch, and after school, building relationships with students, teachers, and parents from Day One.
Detective Brand is also interested in supporting our counseling and attendance efforts, and will be a tremendous resource for anyone on campus supporting a student in a matter that crosses over from school into the home.
All of us are already deeply committed to ensuring the success of each and every one of our soon-to-be Griffin Graduates. Detective Brandt shares in this commitment as well, and is excited to be the newest Staff Member of Los Alamitos High School.
Welcome Detective Brandt!
And if you'd like to get in touch with our new SRO directly, please feel free to email him at dbrandt@losal.org.
