Senior Awards Night:
And These Are Your 2013 Valedictorians!!!

As pictured above, these students were Los Al's top GPA-recipients over the first 7 semesters of their high school career.
They will leave their legacy @ Los Al by finishing at the top of their class, and will go on to represent our school at Universities across the country like Long Beach State, USC, Cal Berkeley, Princeton, and Yale... just to name a few.  Incredible!!!

Packed with Seniors, the PAC was rockin' on Wednesday Night, as our very own Los Alamitos Counseling Department put on the annual Senior Awards Night.

Organized by Donna Savala and our team of counselors, the evening featured scholarships and recognitions from notable groups such as National Charity League, Rossmoor Homeowner's Association, and West Point University.  Seniors were recognized for their incredible accomplishments as parents and friends cheered all night.

Towards the end, the Academic Awards were given out, and it was truly remarkable to see so many peers cheering for the accomplishments of their classmates.  The whole evening was a testament to what a tight-knit community Los Al is, and the fact that we can be so proud of other Griffins for the amazing achievements they've made.

And just think... in a few short weeks these students will be almuni, ready to take on the world with a Los Al diploma in hand...
Can You Say CIF Semi-Finals?
Our Griffin Baseball Team Can!
Celebrating their Quarterfinal victory against top-seeded El Toro, this Griffin baseball team is on their way to the Semis @ Blair Field next Tuesday.  Go Los Al!

Baseball's a crazy game.

For one thing, there's no clock that you're ever up against.  And a two-run lead can turn into a four-run deficit in a matter of minutes.  The game's just nuts... but if you respect that, and play it right, good things can happen.

Even better things can happen with a coach like Matt Nuez.  In his second year as a Physical Education teacher and head baseball coach, Mr. Nuez is doing his best to extend Los Al's storied athletic reputation to the baseball diamond.  He's already won a Sunset League Championship, and is as deep in the playoffs as Los Al's been in over a decade.

So, when you see him on campus this week, be sure and give him a shout.  It's fun to be talking Los Al sports all the way into June.  And thanks to our boys on the field and the philosophy of our baseball program, this is something we may be able to look forward to for years and years to come...
Take Your Students' Test!
The Research Says If You Can Predict Their Mistakes, You're The Best Kind Of Teacher There Is...

The following snippet was taken from an article entitled   as published in the April 2013 edition of the Harvard Gazette.

If you had to explain what causes the change in seasons, could you? Surprisingly, studies have shown that as many as 95 percent of people - including most college graduates - hold the incorrect belief that the seasons are the result of the Earth moving closer to or further from the sun.

The real answer, scientists say, is that as Earth's axis is tilted with respect to its orbit, when on its journey it is angled inward, the sun rises higher in the sky, and that results in more direct sunlight, longer days, and warmer temperatures. Distance plays no role; we are actually closest to the sun in the dead of winter, during the first week of January.

Why do so many people continue to hold the wrong idea? "The answer," said Philip Sadler, the Frances W. Wright Senior Lecturer in the Department of Astronomy and director of the science education department at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), "may be found in what science teachers know."

As part of an unusual study, Sadler and colleagues tested 181 middle school physical science teachers and nearly 10,000 of their students, and showed that while most of the teachers were well-versed in their subject, those better able to predict their students' wrong answers on standardized tests helped students learn the most.

The findings are described in a paper published last month in the American Educational Research Journal titled "The Influence of Teachers' Knowledge on Student Learning in Middle-School Physical Science Classrooms..."

Griffin Gladiators 2013:
Teachers v. Students
Griffin Gladiators 2013 - Los Alalmitos High School
In its inaugural year, Griffin Gladiators, a competition-based evening in which students battle teachers in Survivor-style challenges of brawn and brains, was a huge success...  The students won... but it was close.  Real close.

By the end of an evening that saw teachers jousting with students, chairs being pulled indiscriminately away from blindfolded musical chair participants, dodgeball, and what might have been the world's worst National Anthem (sung/beatboxed by Administration), everyone in attendance was definitely in the mood to MORP!

And lucky for them, the MORP dance was a part of their combo ticket, as students got to see a fun show and then dance the night away the Friday before Memorial Day Weekend!

Teacher-organizers Andrea Parsons, Kathy Currie, and Shari Kaulig promoted the event, and made sure that it was memorable, well-attended, and absolutely hilarious.  Emcees Dave Barker and Lori Franzen added to the hijinks by improvising just about everything, including the amount of points each game was worth.

In the end, the game was tied (funny how that happens), and in order to win, teachers and students needed to do their best "Mr. Arnold" impression to determine a winner.

Needless to say, the teachers lost.

Oh well... Better luck next year!!!!

Los Al InvenTeams:
These Dudes Are Smart!!!!
Los Al InvenTeams 2013
In this video, one of our very own Los Al InvenTeams members showcases the water purification system they'll be taking to Cambridge this Summer.

Necessity is the mother of invention.  And nothing is more necessary in life than clean water... Enter Los Al InvenTeams:

Armed with a great idea, tons of intelligence, and a superior leader in Mr. Martin Valenzuela, Los Alamitos High School

entered the Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams contest hoping to contribute in some way to the world's clean-water problem.

What they ended up doing was building a prototype so good that it's literally being taken to Mexico for real-life testing this Summer.  It just goes to show that with hard work, determination, and a mix of creativity and ingenuity, just about anything is possible.

WISH THE TEAM LUCK AS THEY HEAD TO M.I.T. THIS JUNE TO COMPETE AGAINST HIGH SCHOOLS

FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY!!!
