Dr. Gregg "LEAVE YOUR LEGACY" Stone:
The Calm, Steady Force Behind Los Al's AP/CST Success

Dr. Gregg Stone (middle), coaches up first-year teacher Matt Bone on "Game Day" of CST testing this Friday...

Most of us, when we first started teaching, thought that running a school was a pretty easy gig.  The kids show up, the teacher teaches, and then everyone goes home by 3 o'clock.

It doesn't take long into one's career before they quickly realize all that needs to go on behind the scenes to make the structures and processes of a school work smoothly.

That's where Dr. Gregg Stone comes in...

His tireless work of coordinating, organizing, training, and leading our CST/AP efforts, along with his superior skill in developing a Master Schedule, make him the fulcrum piece of Los Al's ongoing academic success, and our ability to demonstrate achievement when it matters most.

This week, you'll continue to find Dr. Stone in and out of classrooms, working with students, teachers, and families on testing anomalies and individual accommodations, as well as planning for next year's section allocation and accounting for who will be teaching what when we open back up in Fall.

All this, by the way, as he celebrated his birthday on Saturday with family and friends :)

Thank you, Gregg.  We appreciate all the time and energy that goes into making our jobs easier, more logical, and more cohesive overall for all of us.

And Happy 30th... Again!
Carol Jago Is Coming...
And She Practically Wrote The Common Core English Standards
This is how most people see Carol Jago --- with a book in her hand.  The rumor is she reads at least one new book every week.  (How does one find the time?)

On Friday, our school begins a year-long partnership with Carol Jago as we work to be exemplary teachers under the new Common Core State Standards framework.  Carol was on the committee responsible for developing CCSS, and has spent the last seven years of her life advising teachers, schools, and districts from around the country on how to wrap their heads around rigor, text complexity, and writing for students across the curriculum.

For Los Al, the six-days we get to work with Carol over the next year will afford us the opportunity to create a common instructional methodology for implementing Common Core, and then to practice our method and get feedback in the fine-tuning process before the stakes increase in 2014-2015.

I know what you're thinking... "But she's an English connoisseur, only working with English teachers... what's this got to do with me?"

To answer this question, I'd point you in the direction of a Carol Jago / Washington Post article from earlier this year:  What English Classes Should Look Like In The Common Core Era.

In it, she writes, "[English classes] need to be spaces where anyone who didn't do the homework reading feels left out."  But what she's really talking about is EVERY class, EVERY day.  In other words, Common Core is going to give us the freedom, ability, and tools by which we'll be more apt and able to create classroom spaces that students are yearning to be a part of daily. Homework will be an afterthought in this paradigm, as it's truly just preparation and enhancement of the application that will take place in class.  An application, of course, that's desirable for kids.

So grab one of Carol's Books ("WITH RIGOR FOR ALL") and get ready for a wonderful journey that begins this Friday.

By the time Common Core officially rolls around, we'll be well-prepared to create and innovate as opposed to chase and follow...
Just Perfect!
These Students All Got Perfect Scores On The Following Exams: SAT, PSAT, AP CALC, and ACT

These Griffins aren't just smart, they're literally perfect!  (From left to right you're looking at Ryan Miller, The Yeh Twins (Ben & Chris), and Timothy Chou.)

So... you know those high stakes exams that everybody hates taking?  The ones that have acronyms for names and take 3-4 hours to complete?

These students love them!  In fact, they thrive in that environment.

Ryan Miller, Ben Yeh, Chris Yeh, and Timmy Chou all scored 100% perfect on the SAT, PSAT, AP CALC, and ACT respectively.

Wait... let me put that in perspective.

Ryan Miller took the SAT and missed 0 questions.  He got a 2400, is a National Merit Award Winner, and is on his way to Princeton.

Timmy Chou accomplished the same mark on the ACT.  A perfect score, 36 out of 36.  Among test-takers in the high school graduating class of 2013, only 781 of more than 1.66 million students earned a composite score of 36.

Benjamin Yeh accomplished a similar feat, and he's just a Junior. Ben scored a perfect on his PSAT for a score of 240.  He'll be a National Merit Semifinalist, and will continue his academic sibling rivalry with his brother Chris.

Oh, and about Chris... He did something super-rare.  In a letter from The College Board (you should click and read it, it's incredible!), he was notified that "you not only received the top AP score of 5 [on the AP Calculus BC exam], but in doing so, you were one of 17 students in the world to earn every point possible on the AP Calculus BC exam, answering every multiple-choice question correctly and earning the full points possible on each of the open-ended responses in the free-response section of the exam.  Christoper, you earned 108 out of 108.  In total, 94,493 students took the AP Calculus BC Exam in 2012."

How's that for 1%?  Check that... .0017%

Just perfect :)

That's A Lot Of Dirt!
(And Sorry About The Trucks In The A.M. This Week, Everyone...)

What you're looking at used to be the Los Alamitos Track & John Barnes Field.  Well, it's still our track & field... it's just getting a facelift.  A much deserved one at that!

Just a week ago, none of that dirt was there.  In fact, our track & field at Los Al looked the way it's looked for the last 45 years. Not necessarily pretty, but absolutely functional.

In comes the remodel...

As many in the community know by now, our track & field @ Los Al is being modernized, and a new state-of-the art track, field, stadium, and lights complex is being installed to be ready by the year's end.  In order to accomplish this though, our current track needs to be completely demolished so the new one can be installed.  That's where all the dirt is coming from.

As it stood last Wednesday, about four stories of dirt was compiled at the North end of the track.  Before they start building, our contractors need to remove the dirt and even out the surface underneath for a clean and smooth base.  To remove the dirt, humongous dumptrucks have been called to haul everything away.

Unfortunately, this caused some traffic issues Wednesday & Thursday morning :(

Rest assured, there will be no more dump trucks coming or leaving campus during morning arrival or afternoon dismissal.  Dump trucks may only start after 8 a.m., and Ms. Miller's office will make sure that there won't be any more traffic issues as a result of construction.

If, however, you notice something that we need to work on in regards to managing the track project and the day-to-day functions of school, please feel free to email me or Ms. Miller, and we'll make sure to address it ASAP. (jarnold@losal.org, mmiller@losal.org)

Thanks for helping to make our athletic fields and facilities on par with all of our storied success.  We can't wait to put everything to good use in the years and championships ahead!

"Happily Ever After":
I Hope You Dance...
This picture says it all.  Rikki Jones' "HAPPILY EVER AFTER" did everything to showcase the talents of hundreds of students after a year's worth of hard work, effort, and about a billion pirouettes...

What a show!

In front of packed audiences night after night, the students of "HAPPILY EVER AFTER," Los Al's Spring Dance Performance, danced with pride, skill, and determination showing off their talents and abilities to everyone.

After just one number it was easy to see the amount of preparation that went into putting a production like this together.  From the choreography of the student dances, to the set design, to the costumes, to the overall direction, "HAPPILY EVER AFTER" was clearly a coordinated effort between students, teachers, parents, and community supporters.

The performance was emotional, too.  In what probably stood out the most on the evening I attended (Saturday Night, the Seniors' last show), the Seniors performed
their final number together during Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance."  Seniors, Jessica Demian, Leah Feighner, Kylie Godoy, Sallie Hale, Jessica Jenkins, Britanny Jennings, Aubriana Menendez, Hayleigh O'Brien, Justin Rivera, Kelsey Robinson, Sunny Scarbrough, Lauren Vera, and Emill Villa were all crying as the soaked up the gravity of the moment, and the fact that it would be their very last time performing as a group together.

Needless to say, the whole show was amazing!!!!
"Ceci N'est Pas Une Copy Machine":
This Is A Picture Of The Copy Machine That Awaits You In The Copy Room Right Now...
The Monday Morning Memo rarely highlights inanimate objects... but this baby deserves a shout out!

In 1928, Rene Magirtte painted an image of a pipe with the words "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" underneath it --- which translates to "This is is not a pipe."

He was right.  His painting was of the image of a pipe.  It was not a pipe itself.  His point was that only the actual object can give you any emotional satisfaction.  A picture is just a picture, and nothing more...

This analogy also works for our new copy machine in the Copy Room.

YOU NEED TO SEE/USE IT YOURSELF TO ELICIT THE PROPER EMOTIONAL RESPONSE:  ELATION :)

Mr. Gates will continue to work on more solutions to our school's copying woes...  In the meantime, our new copy machine is a super great place to start!!!!  THANKS!
