Los Al Ranks In Top 1% Of All High Schools In America

Rankings aren't everything... And neither are test scores.  But when things like this get published, they do seem to validate all the creativity, innovation, and effort that goes into making Los Al what it is each and every day for our students and families.

The Newsweek / Daily Beast High School Rankings came out this week, and Los Al now ranks in the top 1% of all high schools in the America.  (For a full list of rankings, CLICK HERE.)

The rankings highlight the best 2,000 public high schools in the nation - those that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads. The list is based on six components: graduation rate (25 percent), college acceptance rate (25 percent), AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent), and percent of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course (5 percent).

Wanna see how we did in comparison to other schools in our area?

Just click the here for the RANKINGS SEARCH ENGINE and type in the name of your favorite school to see how we matched up this year.

Considering this a total K-12 effort, congratulations goes to all for their dedication and committment to serving our students as best as possible.

LET'S BE THE #1 District In O.C. This Year!
Must See TV...
TED hosted its first televised broadcast on PBS this week. And the theme was: EDUCATIONKen Robinson: How to escape education's death valley
YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS VIDEO!!! In fact, you have to see all 8 videos from TED's PBS Special this week. We can change education.  At Los Al, we already are.  These videos have great ideas, from great thinkers, and they will surely keep us going.

I'm not sure which video is my favorite... Ken Robinson is already the #1 most watched TEDTalks speaker of all time for his video from 2007 on creativity and innovation which highlights how Gillian Lynne, the world's foremost dance choreographer, got kicked out of school for being "different."  But his new talk is pretty sensational as well.

I'm also a HUGE Geoffrey Canada fan.  (Here's a fun fact: A 12-year study of Geoffrey Canada's Harlem Children's Zone found that HCZ retains and graduates 100% of their Kindergarteners until 12th grade, and that all 100% of them go on to 4-year Universities upon graduation... WHAAAAAAT!?!?!?!?!)

His new talk is below... and it's pretty magnificent.

Geoffrey Canada: Our failing schools. Enough is enough!

HOPE YOU GET INSPIRED!!!!
Do We Have An "AP Shirtmaking" Class On Campus?
Look At All These Rad Shirts!!!
Yes, that's a picture of Economics teacher Brandon Hart inserted into the heart of an iHeartLosAl shirt customized for AP Macro.  Can you say #CST2013? Creativity at its finest!!!

Ms. Brosius' class wears "Gimme 5, Bro" shirts as they convene right after the exam with their unofficial mascot, Gertrude.  (P.S. No pigs were injured in the taking of this picture.)

Ms. Lindahl has the hastag theme going in her AP Stats class!  #noregretz is her class's motto as they gear up for their AP Statistics Exam and test their best :)

Ms. Ball has her students fitted in special iPhotoLosAl shirts that represent all the work and creativity that goes into her students' portfolios for The College Board that get submitted each and every Spring.  The shirts also help to build up a sense of classroom community!

In what may be the funniest AP study shirt on campus, Mr. Anderson's students are wearing a Beastie Boys-inspired shirt with famous Psychologists on it that reads "Check Your Head."

If UCLA Allows Cheating, Should Los Al Too?
How The Notion Of "cheating" Has Turned Into "Collaboration" In Today's Modern Age

"On test day for Peter Nonacs' Behavioral Ecology class at UCLA, he walked into the classroom bearing an impossibly difficult exam. Rather than being neatly arranged in alternate rows with pen or pencil in hand, his students sat in one tight group, with notes and books and laptops open and available. They were poised to share each other's thoughts and to COPY the best answers.  As he distributed the tests, the students began to talk and write.

All of this would normally be called cheating. But it was completely okay by him..."

... And now for a story about cheating (also from UCLA).

When I was at UCLA for Undergrad, I remember a day when our English Professor came to class on the Monday after our Midterm Papers were turned in and announced to the whole class that "somebody had cheated."  He didn't say who, and he didn't say how... but he did say that he was willing to accept that person's paper so long as they turned it in by 3pm that same Monday.

That afternoon, he had 80 essays in his mailbox...including mine.

Here's the best part...  At Wednesday's class, our professor announced how many papers he had received that day, and then he revealed the truth:  he was lying about the fact that someone had cheated.

No one had cheated!  Including me.  My professor just wanted to see what would happen if he made that king of announcement.

So why did I turn in my paper?  And why did that professor play this cruel trick on us?

I think the answer is that the definition of "cheating" is extremely personal and narrow.  Once we exit the classroom, opportunities to "cheat" or "collaborate" are everywhere.  And one person's understanding of cheating is another person's understanding of learning.

So what can we do at Los Al to help define cheating and collaboration for teachers, students, and families?

Keep talking.  The more we listen and share, the more our understandings of the issue will come together, and the more unified we can be in addressing cheating, learning, and collaboration in schools.

HALL OF FAME:
That's Where Legendary Los Al Football Coach John Barnes Is Headed On June 15th!

Above, Coach Barnes celebrates with his wife, Anita, and the '12 Griffin Football Team as they beat Marina High School for Coach Barnes' 300th career victory.

Once you hit 300 victories, there's really only one place you can go.

John Barnes, head football coach at Los Alamitos High School, will be inducted into the California High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame this summer.  At an annual banquet in Fresno June 15, the association will honor Barnes for his years of leading the Los Alamitos Griffins to more than 300 victories and multiple CIF Championships.

Coach has already been named to the Los Alamitos Hall of Fame and the Long Beach Hall of Fame

"More important and noteworthy than all of his victories, is the manner in which he has helped to shape the future of thousands of young men," Dr. Kropp, Los Al Superintendent, said.

The 5th annual awards night is June 15 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center at 2233 Ventura in Fresno. The cost is $45 a plate. For more information call 559-268-1000.

Way To Go Coach!

Orange County's Outstanding Arts Educator:
David Moellenkamp
Smack-dab in the middle of family, friends, and co-workers, David Moellenkamp stands tall and humbled at being named one of Orange County's Outstanding Arts Educators this year.

With tons of amazing arts educators at our school, district, and throughout the county, it's quite prestigious to be named among the very best.

Such was the case for Mr. Moellenkamp this year, and his family and friends were on hand at Segerstrom Hall last Monday to share in this amazing honor.  Mr. Moellenkamp has been leading Los Al's Choir program for the last 4 years, and in that time has helped our Griffins win multiple National Championships, including this year's Grand Chapmions Award at Orlando's FAME competition earlier this April.

Congratulations Mr. Moellenkamp!  And thank you for valuing the Arts and creating unlimited possibilities for our students :)
LosAl InvenTeams Showcase:
May 20th @ 6:30pm In PAC

The Los Alamitos High School InvenTeam is one of 16 teams participating across the United States in the Lemelson-MIT Eurekafest 2013.  The teams has received an $8,000+ invention grant to create their invention on water purification.
