If These Walls Could Talk:
How The Psychology of Your Room Environment Can Help Students Learn
This is an actual snapshot of Mr. Barker's wall in class. If you look closely enough, you'll see students posed next to Elementary School marquees, street signs, and other landmarks that all contain the word "Barker" somewhere in their title.
In Mr. Barker's class, students are tasked to look at things a little bit differently than they might be used to. And this becomes supremely evident from the second you walk through his door.
You see, Mr. Barker's room is decorated with 10-step Algebra problems on one whiteboard, a semester-long game of "Survivor" on another, and literally thousands of pictures of students out in the community trying desperately to connect what goes on outside of class to what happens inside of class.
Mr. Barker's entire room environment, in fact, adds to the consistency of his instructional delivery. He operates in the exact same way that his walls do: two parts rigor, one part relationship, and a dash of funny here and there to kick up the flavor.
It's the consistency of his room, however, that reminds his students of what they'll be experiencing that period... and he always delivers.
So, think about doing something with your room environment that speaks to your values, style, and subject matter if you haven't already. I remember somewhere in Harry Wong's book, FIRST DAYS OF SCHOOL, he recommends that a classroom be able to be identified by subject area without a single teacher or student present. That is to say, if you walk into a French classroom and you think it's a Calculus class, something's awry...
Whether it's posters, student work/projects, personal pictures, alumni pennants, or otherwise, what you do to the learning space has a deep impact on student outputs.
Be thoughtful. Be creative. But most of all, be YOU.

Suits & Ties For Kids @ Los Al???:
Blame Speech & Debate... Or, Better Yet, Thank Them :)
Recognize these fashion-forward teenagers? Los Al students know how to dress the part when the situation calls for it.
Just because it needs to be said... Los Al rules! From the high quality teaching and learning that occurs daily, to the long-standing traditions of excellence in athletics and the arts... Los Alamitos High School is a pretty amazing place. So, of course, students on Mr. Celestin's Speech & Debate Team dress the part on days they compete. In fact, almost all students representing groups that compete wear some form of a uniform on "the big day" --- slacks and polos for basketball players, jerseys for our footballers, spirit gear for our cheerleaders, and so much more. The same is true of class presentations as well. At least twice this year, students wearing full-on togas have been
spotted at lunch co-mingling with peers as if their attire were completely normal.
The fact is, it's a real-life skill to know how and when to "dress the part." As adults, we all have our "Saturday Clothes," but we know what's appropriate for work, or for a wedding, and can dress the part when necessary. The same goes for our students. If we ask them to dress up, or appropriately, they will. And, over time, they'll learn the importance of dressing for the occasion... and be more prepared for life after high school as a result. |

Winter Sports Week:
A Photo Essay on Fun & Competition All Week Long
Los Al knows how to represent. With a packed gym on Friday night, students and fans brought the noise all game long vs. FV.
And Winter Sports Week was a family affair. Sons, daughters, husbands, wives, and friends could be seen at every event all over campus.
Wow! That's a lot of folks out there supporting Boys & Girls soccer this week!!!!
And if you haven't seen our Sunset League-leading Boys Wrestling team in action, they're quite the competitors!!!
We culminated the week with a Food Truck Night in which 3 sweet and savory food trucks fed thousands of students, parents, and alumni as a slew of campus activities took place. We look forward to further supporting every aspect of educating the Whole Child @ Los Al, as we continue our com-mitment to the 4 A's: Academics, Athletics, Activities, and The Arts.. |
A Famous Guest Speaker In Your Classroom Whenever You Want:
What Teaching Will Be Like Once YouTube Gets Unveiled This Week...
On Friday, Ms. King invited former Poet Laureate of The United States, Billy Collins, to her class to personally lecture her students. P.S. He was amazing!!!
O.K., maybe Billy Collins's flesh and blood weren't in Room 708 on Friday, but his voice and likeness sure were! Even more importantly, his message and lesson were delivered to Ms. King's class of AP Lit students more than adequately. This, of course, is because of the power bringing video into the classroom has.
And soon... very soon... we'll all have access to the greatest online video portal in the world: YouTube.
But until we do, consider using video from unblocked resources like TED, which is where this Billy Collins video can be found. If you haven't heard about TED already, it stands for "Technology, Entertainment, and Design" and is a non-profit group committed to spreading "ideas worth sharing." Their videos are amazing, and all speakers are given 3, 6, 9, or 18 minutes to give a "talk," in which the only rules are that 1) you can't use notes, and 2) you can't sell anything...
For a list of the Top 20 Ted Talks (many of which are on education, creativity, or innovation) click here: Top 20 Ted Talks.
Once our new internet filter is fully installed, and YouTube is available for teaching and learning every day... there's no telling what guest speaker you'll invite to chat with your kids, and how impactful he/she will be :)
