One of the most critical programs that KORE Academy offers is our reading intervention program. Most parents and students know that this program exists but unless you are one of the families who is directly impacted, you may not realize what a gem we have in the teacher of this program:

Becky Malone. readng

Having been at KORE, since 2005, Mrs. Malone is the backbone of the program that has enabled so many KORE students over the years to reach grade level and beyond in reading.

While she  uses The Blue Book method to teach reading, based on  the Orton-Gillingham approach, Mrs. Malone can frequently be seen doing research on the most current techniques to reach kids with reading difficulties. Because struggling readers learn in different ways (just like all our kids!) Mrs. Malone's classroom includes visual, auditory, tactile and movement activities. You might find KORE reading students singing, dancing, moving, touching, and listening as they learn!

As is typical of the KORE environment, Mrs. Malone collaborates with grade level teachers to ensure that maximum progress is being made. When you see the gains these kids make, whether learning their letters and sounds for the first time or gaining one or more grade levels at year's end, it is inspirational. As Mrs. Malone says:

"This is why I became a teacher!"

Jay demonstrates his reading skill under the watchful eye of Mrs. Malone.

Nearly 30% of KORE Academy students work with Becky Malone on improving their reading skills. They work one-on-one and in groups improving their literacy skills and also their confidence! Each student in the reading program is making wonderful progress. Following is the story of one of them:

Since beginning at KORE in August as a first grader, Jay, has doubled and in some cases, more than tripled his reading progress scores! Critical to his progress are his phoneme segmentation scores. Those high marks mean that Jay has dramatically improved his ability to break a word down into its component sounds, a critical skill to mastering reading.

Jay is now excited about reading books and virtually anything else in his path including street signs, posters, and the directions to the worksheets he gets in class!
DramaGrantDrama Grant Received

KORE Academy is excited to announce that we have received a $2500 grant for our Drama Opens the Door to Literacy Program! This grant supports the cost of partnering with the Lexington Children's Theater (LCT). Each year, KORE students, in two separate groups for two weeks each, work with staff from LCT to put on a play! Drama as a literacy tool is invaluable because it supports every aspect of literacy development from fluency and vocabulary to improved memory and comprehension. Thank you Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky!!
