Three students will graduate from KORE this year, and all three of them have been accepted and plan to attend Bluegrass Community & Technical College! The role KORE Academy played in their journeys speaks to the many different times that students begin with us here. One of our graduates came to us as a 7th grader, a second one enrolled as a junior last year, and the third has only been with us for her senior year. It's never too late to make a change!

Speaking of change, it comes with every new school year. New students join re-enrolling students, and the makeup of each blended class is unique to the coming year. We have twenty-seven students re-enrolling and many prospective applications being reviewed for next year's classes, which puts us in a financially stable position for the coming year.

Some of the new applications coming in are a result of the first annual Open House held recently, which was well attended. Prospective families and referring schools were able to learn more about KORE and visit classrooms, view curricula, and talk with teachers. Monthly informational sessions will continue to be held for inquiring families, in addition to the annual Open House.

One of the things visiting families always comment on is the beautiful art work they see in the halls. At KORE we value the arts! Judy Greer does a fantastic job introducing our students to meaningful art projects that result in unique art pieces that reflect the identity of the artist! She also provided leadership for this year's Science Festival, which included science projects that asked many fascinating questions, along with a variety of other demonstrations of scientific principles at work.

The annual theater workshop with the Lexington Children's Theater is always a hit with visiting families as well. Currently middle school and intermediate students are involved in a 2-week workshop with the Lexington Children's Theater, and in addition to this yearly workshop for all students, intermediate students also have a drama class each week as an elective. Everything from role playing social situations to putting on a play for the rest of the school is a part of this class taught by Mindi Day.

As another year draws to a close, I count myself fortunate to play a small part in the educational journeys of our students. Thanks to all of you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

Carol Douglas

KORE Academy Director

Message from the BOARD

KORE Academy will soon have a nonprofit portrait on the website: www.goodgiving.net. GoodGiving.net is a powerful online resource to inform, empower and enrich charitable giving in the region. Powered by GuideStar, and supported by the Blue Grass Community Foundation staff, the portrait will be a powerful tool for KORE Academy to share our stories with the community, as well as supporters, Community Foundation fundholders, prospective donors and funders. Through this site, visitors will be able to access information and make credit card contributions to KORE or other local nonprofit organizations. All services are completely free to the public and to participating nonprofits.

We are excited about joining other local nonprofits in raising awareness about our place in the Central Kentucky community and the services we provide to children with learning challenges. We also welcome the opportunity to  provide additional information to allow potential donors to make strategic giving decisions. To view our portrait, go to www.goodgiving.net.

Thank you for your support of our mission!

Sincerely,

Vicki Henderson
Board President

Development Update

Thank you to the Children's Charity Fund
of the

Bluegrass for their continued commitment to the children of Kentucky. We are thankful to have continued to receive their support for our Tuition Assistance Fund. This year we received $10,000!  Many thanks to their board and to the participants in the annual Children's Charity Classic golf tournament that make these funds possible.

Spring Fundraising Mailer

Many thanks to the KORE Academy board members, parents, alumni parents, grandparents, former teachers and friends who donated a total of $6,225 to KORE Academy as a result of our spring mailer! This is a record total for an annual fund mailer!

Words can not express the gratitude that we all feel for this expression of encouragement for the education and opportunity that we provide the students with learning challenges in Central Kentucky.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE

Intermediate iPad Program

The first year of incorporating iPads into the curriculum in our Intermediate class, grades 3-5, is coming to a close. We are pleased to report that this model program has been a resounding success!

Our teachers report that the iPads have energized the students and provided enormous opportunity for differentiated learning. Students report that they like using their iPad for research, math, reading, and spelling. They also like creating! Students have created videos and stories using special applications.

Because our classrooms are blended, with students in the same class working at a variety of levels, the iPad allows teachers to reinforce the same lesson in different ways! Each student has their own apps tailored to the way they learn: a read aloud book for those who learn best by listening, hands-on apps for those who learn through tactile integration, a short video for those visual learners.

Our plan for the next school year is to purchase an additional 5 iPads to accommodate new students.

KORE ACADEMY ACCREDITATION
