Besides having a good Library Area in each classroom, enhance learning by having selected books in some Interest Areas. Make sure the young cook has a book on vegetables at hand to inspire his next recipe. Let children take a look at Lois Ehlert's collages before they embark on their own art work.

Greetings!

Working on a new catalog is always an exciting time at the Book Vine!
We read & review hundreds of new titles, and then select the very best for our catalog.  2013 marks the first year we will mail our catalogs in January. We have shifted our mailing date due to changes in the publishing industry.  Fortunately the quality of the title selection you have come to rely on will not be affected at all!  We want to share our excitement and hope you enjoy a sneak peek at the Best New Books for 2013!  Click the link to view these titles and continue to read on to see what else is happening at the Book Vine for Children.
New! Fruit From The Vine
Story Extension Cards

We're excited to introduce you to our newest project, something you have often requested.  We're calling it Fruit from the Vine because it's about reaping even more from the quality books you always find in our catalog.  We're offering activity ideas for taking books beyond story time and extending their use into classroom projects.  Look for the books with the
Fruit from the Vine icon throughout the catalog.  When you order one of these books, you will receive the book and an activity card describing three ways to use the book in the classroom.

Click here to view a sample idea from one of the Story Extension Cards.

The value of a good book lasts well past story time.  It can spark creative play, inspire art projects, and motivate exploration.  Our Fruit From The Vine activity ideas provide you with easy and ready-made ways to integrate good books into your classrooms.  Let us know how you use and adapt them.

Pete Groovy Buttons
Pete The Cat and His Groovy Buttons

Pete the Cat is back in his inimitable style of going with the flow of life. He dons his favorite yellow shirt with its groovy buttons only to lose them, one by one throughout the course of the book. Does he lose his cool along with  his buttons? No way Daddy-O! He moves on in his beatific way, understanding that in life buttons come and buttons go. A great book for simple math activities.  Pete The Cat and His Groovy Buttons comes complete with a  Story Extension Card.  Visit our website for all of the Pete the Cat titles.

Meet the Author/Illustrator
James Dean at NAEYC
James Dean

At this year's NAEYC conference we had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know James Dean, the illustrator behind the wildly successful Pete the Cat books. James provided a bit of mystery as he stood on the stage behind an easel during Isabel's presentation. She introduced him as she finished with a Pete the Cat title. During his time at the easel he began a painting of Pete the Cat reading a copy of Where the Wild Things Are. He later completed the painting at our booth.

James was kind enough to put together an impromptu presentation for the "Meet the Authors and Illustrators" session, taking the place of Peter Reynolds who, due to an illness, could not make it to the conference. He is funny, sincere, thoughtful as well as a talented painter. We were very glad to have him at the conference.

Aside from bitter cold, ice storms and power outages, what could be more magical than winter? Landscapes once lush with greenery reveal their bones, trees show off their branches and bark, houses that were enveloped in shrubbery stand alone for a while and evergreens provide dark silhouettes against the white back drop of snow.

If the idea of winter takes the whipped cream from your hot chocolate just look around for the visual wonders that it produces...frost ices the windowpanes in delicate patterns, branches dusted with hoary frost make prickly outlines against gray skies and snow drifts in graceful shimmering waves of purple and blue in the winter sunset.

Children love winter and need to experience the joy of snowfall, the rattle of branches in the wind and the gentle artistry of Jack Frost's work. A quick walk down the block or a romp in the side yard provides a little nip of winter, just the right amount to appreciate a mug of cocoa.
