Important Safety Notification & Tips
The Early Learning Coalition has been informed that a preschool teacher  in Pinellas County was attacked yesterday morning when arriving to work. A similar incident occurred at a local elementary school a couple of weeks ago. These tragic incidences serve as a reminder to exercise caution when arriving to or leaving work especially during the early morning and late evening hours.

Below is a list of safety precautions that the Coalition received from local law enforcement to be shared with staff. The safety of our children, teachers and staff are always our top priority. Please be careful and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

Safety Tips

By being aware of your surroundings, you can decrease the likelihood that you will be a victim of a crime.  Make these safety tips a part of your daily routine!

Driving to/from Work:

  • Do not carry anything in your purse that you don't want to lose and make certain that you know exactly what you have on you (credit card, amount of money, etc).
  • Have your keys ready as your approach your vehicle.
  • Once you get inside, immediately lock the doors and leave.  Don't sit in your vehicle and put on makeup, make phone calls, find a good station on the radio, etc.
  • Check your destination area before you get out of your vehicle.
  • Ensure that parking areas and entrances are well lit. Replace any non-working lights as soon as possible. Check to see if there are any areas around your home (or parking lot) where it is dark and could be used to hide.

At Work:

  • When possible, keep doors and windows locked.
  • Lock up your valuables in a locked drawer, file cabinet, etc.
  • If you must work earlier or later than normal, let someone know where you are and when you expect to be done. Set up a time to call and check in.

You may also contact your local law enforcement agency and ask to have a free security survey done for your home and/or business.  The security survey checks everything, such as address visibility, exteriors and exists.
