VPK Assessment News
Assessment Requirement 
Last month all VPK providers should have conducted the VPK Assessment with VPK children. This month you will be scoring your assessments and entering the data into the Bright Beginnings Online Reporting System.

As previously announced, Office of Early Learning released a new VPK Assessment guidance in June of 2014. This guidance requires providers to complete the VPK Assessment during the month of September and to enter the data online for AP1 by October 31st. Any provider who does not meet these requirements is not permitted to have a VPK contract for 5 years.


Scoring Update

The Early Learning Coalition received an update regarding scoring item 22 of the VPK Assessment Period 1 (AP1). The question states, "This man is standing with his shadow. What made the shadow appear?"  

 

Correct responses include: a source of light (e.g. sun, light, moon, lamp) OR something in front of or blocking the source of light. If the child responded "the man standing in front of the light" or "the man blocking the light", they would be given credit.   

 

Incorrect response: Simply stating "the man". 

 

We do not want children to internalize that a "man" is what casts a shadow but the idea that anything (living or non-living thing) that blocks a light source or is in front of light source is what creates a shadow. We also want to ensure validity and reliability by making sure that those who are administering the test are following the same guidelines as to what is correct vs. incorrect.
