Need A Speaker?

We would love to speak to your organization or church group about the work of Craven Literacy Council. Please contact Sandra McKinney at s.mckinney@cravenliteracy.org or 252-637-8079 to schedule a speaker.

Welcome New Student Coordinator Ericka Foluke

From Ericka:  "I received my undergraduate degree in Social Work from Rutgers University in Camden, City NJ. While waiting to be hired as a Social Worker, I substitute taught in Camden City school district; this is where I discovered my passion for teaching.  It was exhilarating to watch the children make mental connections that signified their understanding of a skill being taught. It was like watching a wave of light flowing through their bodies starting from their feet and rising toward their heads and out through their eyes. At that moment, it clicked for me-I wanted to be a teacher.  I am working toward my Master's degree in reading and my TEFL certification to teach English as second language.  My philosophy is anyone can learn to read with determination and resilience."

Ericka is looking forward to getting to know everyone.  Please stop by the office and introduce yourself and your student to Ericka. We are delighted and excited to have her on board. Ericka can be reached at e.foluke@cravenliteracy.org.
Register for the Digital Literacy Workshop in May

CLC is introducing a Digital Literacy Workshop for tutors and their students. Students, with the assistance of their tutors, will be introduced to digital concepts and skills so that students can use computer technology in everyday life.  Having these skills helps students develop new social and economic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their communities. The instructor will cover a variety of topics ranging from computer basics, email, practice storing and retrieving data and files, and will explore websites with a focus on everyday life and work interests.

The workshop will begin on May 2 and will continue with sessions on May 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, and 25 (all Tuesdays and Thursdays). The class will be offered in the morning from 10:00am to 12:00pm or evening from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  To learn more about this opportunity, please email Carol McCormick at c.mccormick@cravenliteracy.org
New Hours Reporting Form

I hope you are liking the new tutor hours reporting forms which are located on the Tutor's Bulletin Board in Suite F as well as online.  I want to thank you all for transitioning to them seamlessly.  Thank you for continuing  to keep your hours coming in (by the 10th of each month for the previous month).  If you have any questions, please contact Debby at d.guillory@cravenliteracy.org.
Assessment

Important Assessment Information

It's that time of the year for informal assessment and post-testing for students who have 40 or more instructional hours.  Informal assessment and post-testing will take place during the months of April - June.  Please stop in the office the next time you're scheduled to tutor and pick-up an informal assessment or schedule a post-test for your student(s).

The informal assessments are proving to help students achieve educational gains.  After you have administered the informal assessment and if it shows that your student(s) needs additional help prior to being administered the post-test, Ericka or Carol will review strategies with you to help your student(s) pass the post-test. If you have any questions, please contact e.foluka@cravenliteracy.org.

Is Your Student Planning to Stop Tutoring?

If you believe that you and your student(s) will be stopping your tutoring sessions, please immediately notify Ericka or Carol via email or calling (252-637-8079). We would like for you to administer an informal assessment and to schedule a time and date for your student to come in and be posted-test.

Tutoring Tip from Ericka

FYI:  Use actual/real objects in your teaching whenever possible. The more students interact with real objects, it increases their understanding of the subject and aids in recall for everyday life and the test.
Student Newsletter is Available

The March 2017 edition of the Student Newsletter is now available.  Please be sure to pick up a copy to share with your student.  If you meet off-site and need one mailed to you, just let us know.

Save the Date - 3rd Annual Trivia Night

On Thursday, June 15th, Coastal Carolina Health System and Craven Literacy Council present the 3rd Annual Trivia Night and Silent Auction to be held at the Harrison Ministry Center, in downtown New Bern. This fun event features four rounds of spirited competition with teams/tables of up to 6 people competing for cash prizes, bragging rights, and the Trivia trophy. You may BYOT (Bring Your Own Team) or join a team at the event.

The event (6:00 - 8:30 p.m.) begins with time to socialize, have a drink, gather your team together while checking out the competition, and peruse the large selection of silent auction items including gift baskets and dining packages.

When the games begin at 6:30 p.m., Master of Ceremonies Jim Gilmore (of Brown Pelican Trivia Night events) reads the trivia questions, possibly as mundane as - "which state is the largest consumer of Jello?" - that are answered by the different teams. At the end of the competition, the top winners take home $500 and the Trivia Night Trophy. Prizes are also awarded for best team name.

Tickets are $50 per person and includes delicious light supper fare catered by The Tiny Tornado (winners of the 2017 Taste of Carolina), as well as a drink ticket, and 2 raffle tickets.  Tickets may be purchased at the Craven Literacy office, or from our website www.cravenliteracy.org.

Tutors - Are you interested in joining a Tutor Team?  Trivia Night consists of up to 6 people to a team.  This is a team event, so no one person is put on the spot regarding answering questions.  Everyone has different areas in which they are most knowledgeable, so join up and be a part of a Tutor Team.  It's a great way to get to know some of your fellow tutors.  Spouses and guests are welcome!  Sign up sheets for a Tutor Team are available in Office F or contact April at april.cravenliteracy@gmail.com.

Volunteer Opportunity - Proctor Help Needed!

We need help to monitor student assessment sessions beginning in April and running through June. Please call Carol at 637-8079 or email her at c.mccormick@cravenliteracy.org if you want to learn more about this volunteer opportunity.

Lesson Plan to Thank Donors Available

In each meeting room is a "Thank You Lesson" in a blue folder.  In this packet is a lesson plan idea for writing thank you notes along with blank note cards to guide you as to how to make this into an effective lesson and life skill for your student.  The more cards composed all through the year, the better.

Craven Literacy Council would not be able to provide the facility, materials, and supplies for you and the students without the generosity of our donors.  We think it would be very meaningful to our donors to receive a thank you note from our students.  We are asking that any time that you have a spare few minutes in your lessons for the day, that you have your student compose a thank you note to our donors.  These cards should then be placed in the envelope attached to the bulletin board for staff to pick up and use as needed.

Thank you so much for all your time and hard work.  If you have any other ideas of personal ways our students may thank our donors, please let me know.  We are truly appreciative of the difference you are making.
