Need A Speaker?

We would love to speak to your organization or church group about the work of Craven Literacy Council. Please contact Sandra McKinney at [email protected] or 252-637-8079 to schedule a speaker.

 Greetings!

We kicked off the month of March with a presentation by Tammy Childers from the Eastern North Carolina Workforce Development Board (www.ecwdb.org). Workplace literacy is an important essential life skill our students need to practice if they want to continue to provide for themselves and their families.  Many of our students would like to use these community resources to improve their lives but don't have the necessary literacy skills.

Craven Literacy Council has foundational resources to build our students' literacy skills in the workplace. What's available? We have materials for all ability levels...Workplace Safety, Vocabulary Activities, Conversations, Role plays, Job Search Activities, Using Forms and Filling out Applications, Goal Setting Exercises, Exploring Interests and Careers, Developing Soft Skills, including websites to reinforce these important workplace skills. Please stop to see what is available to you and your student!

With Appreciation,

Carol

Student Coordinator Position Update

We have received several applications from qualified candidates for the Student Coordinator position.  We anticipate making an announcement very soon.  In the meantime, please know that if you have any questions regarding your student(s), assessments, etc. you may call or email Carol at 252-637-8079 or [email protected].

Volunteer Opportunity - Proctor Help Needed!

We need help to monitor student assessment sessions beginning in April and running through June. Please call Carol at 637-8079 or email her at [email protected] if you want to learn more about this volunteer opportunity.

Student Test Prep

We will be assessing (testing) most of our active students in the period between April and June. We test those students who show proficiency on the Informal Assessment and have accrued at least 40 hours of instruction by the testing time period (April to June).

Why? We give the tests as a way to measure a student's progress and also to satisfy accountability requirements from our funders.

How can you help your student be ready? We have Informal Assessments and study guides for you to use with your student, in addition to your usual coursework over the next several weeks. Do you need an informal Assessment or Study guide? Please stop in the office to pick one up or email Carol McCormick at [email protected] to have one emailed to you.

New Hours Reporting Form

Please be aware that the Hours Reporting Form is changing online and on paper in March. New federal rules require CLC to report each tutor session and the length of instruction time. Submission will still be at the end of every month, but individual days and times will need to be noted. CLC sent you an information packet in the mail in February with more information and explicit directions. Please call Debby Guillory at 637-8079 or email [email protected] if you have any questions.Thank you for your understanding and patience as we transition to this new procedure.
Please Help Us Thank Our Donors

In each meeting room is a "Thank You Lesson" in a blue folder.  In this packet is a lesson plan idea for writing thank you notes along with blank note cards to guide you as to how to make this into an effective lesson and life skill for your student.  The more cards composed all through the year, the better.

Craven Literacy Council would not be able to provide the facility, materials, and supplies for you and the students without the generosity of our donors.  We think it would be very meaningful to our donors to receive a thank you note from our students.  We are asking that any time that you have a spare few minutes in your lessons for the day, that you have your student compose a thank you note to our donors.  These cards should then be placed in the envelope attached to the bulletin board for staff to pick up and use as needed.

Thank you so much for all your time and hard work.  If you have any other ideas of personal ways our students may thank our donors, please let me know.  We are truly appreciative of the difference you are making.

Digital Literacy Workshop in May

CLC is introducing a Digital Literacy Workshop for tutors and their students. Students, with the assistance of their tutors, will be introduced to digital concepts and skills so that students can use computer technology in everyday life.  Having these skills helps students develop new social and economic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their communities. The instructor will cover a variety of topics ranging from computer basics, email, practice storing and retrieving data and files, and explore websites with a focus on everyday life and work interests.

The workshop will begin on May 2 and will continue with sessions on May 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, and 25 (all Tuesdays and Thursdays). The class will be offered in the morning from 10:00am to 12:00pm or evening from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

blue-bike.jpg

Students now have a fast way to get around town, thanks to your generous response to our bike drive. Thank you for making it a great success. If your student would like a bike, Broad Street Christian Church has an amazing Bike Ministry.  Tell your student to go in person to the church and put their name on a waiting list for a road ready bike.  When the church has a refurbished bike available, your student will be notified to pick up their new ride. Just another fantastic New Bern program available to everyone. For questions call Broad Street Church Bike Ministry at 252-638-1216.
