Need A Speaker?

We would love to speak to your organization or church group about the work of Craven Literacy Council. Please contact Sandra McKinney at [email protected] or 252-637-8079 to schedule a speaker.

The holidays are a special time to reflect and give thanks. Thank you for your dedication and perseverance with your students. Thank you for your support and attendance of CLC's in-services and tutor events throughout the year. As we approach the New Year, please know that my door is always open. I am happy to meet with you and provide instructional guidance especially in areas you feel you would like to help your student improve. Student improvement is what our organization is all about.

In the new year, please look forward to New Tutor Training the third week of January, and upcoming in-service workshops for both students and tutors. We plan to cover a variety of student learning needs such as Family Literacy, Health Literacy, Workforce Preparation, Explore Craven Community College, and New Bern Community Services.

Best Wishes for a safe holiday season.

Carol
Articles Needed for Student Newsletter

It's time again to gather stories for the Student Newsletter. The deadline for submitting articles is December 12th. Please encourage/help your student submit an article for the coming issue. If your student isn't comfortable writing yet, this is a great opportunity to practice the language experience activity. You may leave the article at the office, email them to [email protected], or give them to anyone on the staff.

Give the "Gift of Literacy" This Holiday Season

As you search for the perfect gift for the upcoming holiday season, consider the "Gift of Literacy" and make a difference in someone's life, or make the donation in celebration of Craven Literacy Council's 30th Anniversary. With this gift, you are helping students like Julius obtain his high school equivalency, Noan gain the skills to get a better job, and Palel achieve her citizenship.

By making a donation to Craven Literacy Council in honor of your friends or loved ones, you are making a meaningful contribution to our community. Your recipients will receive a beautiful holiday card celebrating your gesture.

Each card requires a minimum gift of $25 and will announce:

"A Gift of Literacy has been given to
Craven Literacy Council
in your honor by (your name here).
We wish you a wonderful Holiday Season!"

To ensure holiday delivery, notify us no later than December 17 to be sure your gift card arrives in time for the holidays, or go to our website at www.cravenliteracy.org to make your gift online.  Your gift is tax-deductible.

Are You Hungry yet....just thinking about the international array of food we will be enjoying at our annual Holiday Potluck? I can't decide on what to make; my Polish Grandmother's Cabbage, wrapped Pigs in the Blanket, or something equally delicious but less time-consuming like her Coconut Frosted Spice Cake. You will only know what I decide by attending with or without your student(s).

To make clean-up a breeze, please, please bring your dish in a disposable container. Can't wait to see you all and taste everything!

From the Executive Director

As 2016 comes to an end, we also close the chapter on our 30th anniversary year. May I be the first to applaud and thank each one of you for giving us your most valued treasures, your time and talents.  I thank all who became new students and tutors, who continue to give the very best to your students, who helped in countless ways in our office and at our many special events, who told us we were doing a terrific job, who served on our Board, and who gave a financial donation. Most of all, I want to thank our awesome staff who gave their endless commitment to our mission and always go above and beyond the call of duty.

Please join me in praising the work of Janet Peregoy, who is stepping down from the board in January. Janet has been the backbone of our fundraising events for many years. Our fundraising efforts would not have been successful without her leadership. She has agreed to continue as a member of our Fundraising Committee moving forward. Thank you Janet!

In celebration of the holiday season, join me in a few of "Life's Little Instructions"....never refuse homemade brownies, compliment three people every day, think big thoughts, but relish small pleasures, look people in the eye, always accept an outstretched hand and be the first to say "hello".

I wish you and yours a joyous and blessed Holiday season.

Sandra
