Greetings!
Happy Thanksgiving to our tutors and volunteers who improve and empower the lives for our students at Craven Literacy Council! We have been working very hard to meet with many of our literacy partners in the community to solidify new and existing Positive Partnerships. We discuss the importance of positive partnerships during new tutor trainings. We have worked with the staff at Mount Olive College to not only use their space during the day for tutoring, but also host tutor trainings in their large and modern classrooms. We have had the wonderful opportunity to get to know the personnel at the Housing Authority who are dedicated to the community who live at Craven Terrace and Trent Court. A few of the employees joined our last New Tutor Training, and they have invited us to use their office space for tutoring.
It has been such a pleasure meeting the hardworking individuals at Interfaith Refugee Ministry (IRM) and learn about how they acclimate families to New Bern and the American way of life. We exchanged curriculum materials and look forward to having IRM come tour our tutoring space and offices. We have had the privilege to meet with the caring souls at Uptown Business and Professional Association who are tirelessly working with individuals who want their G.E.D. They have an impressive new computer lab and we enjoyed hearing directly from the students about their dreams and goals.
We are always in conversation with Craven Community College about how we can help adults access both the campus and the Literacy Council to help them reach their potential. Additionally, the library on campus (Barker Hall) is now available for tutoring space.
And finally, we were thrilled to meet the nice folks at NC Works! They have a few study cubicles we can use for tutoring space, and they offer other services for our students such as a computer lab for job and career exploration. It is so encouraging to meet people in a professional capacity who make it their mission to improve and empower lives in New Bern and the surrounding community.
With gratitude,

Citizenship In-Service
Please join us for a special presentation titled "The Process of Becoming A Citizen" by David P. Knutson, the Community Relations Officer from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). During the presentation, you will learn about the steps your student needs to take to achieve their Citizenship, understand important details about the process, and clarify any information you may find challenging. Please bring your student along too, as Mr. Knutson will be available for questions after the presentation. It is important to register you and your student (if they plan to attend) due to limited space. We recommend you attending even if you do not have a student pursuing Citizenship because it will be fascinating to learn about this honorable process!
.
The presentation is on Tuesday, November 15 from 4:00pm. to 6:00pm.

Informal Assessments
Craven Literacy Council's funding depends upon educating our students. CLC's Program staff would like to help you with this very important mission. Please contact Carol McCormick at c.mccormick@cravenliteracy.org or call the CLC office at 637-8079 to make an appointment. You will learn about focused curriculum to practice reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to improve your student's literacy. You can give your students informal assessments to track their learning progress. We have these assessments available for you right now. Lucky for us, we have already heard from about 50 percent of our tutors. Please consider making an appointment to meet with Carol, Amy or Debby soon.

Student Services Updates with Amy
Wow, I am beginning my third month as CLC's Student Services Coordinator! I can't believe how fast these weeks have passed. I am still enjoying and laughing as I learn, just like you and your student, as we both accomplish the goals we have set.
With the energetic help of a tutor, many of our students become U.S. Citizens! Please let me know if your student became a citizen in 2016 or has an upcoming date for the Taking the Oath ceremony. We have a CLC certificate that I would like to present to celebrate their success. Look in Office F for a new bulletin board themed 'New Citizens and the
Tutors Who Helped Them.' I would like a photo of you with your student to post on this bulletin board and in future Tutor Talk newsletters. I invite those tutors who are working on Citizenship with their students to check out this video on YouTube. Each question from the 100 Civics and History questions is presented on a flashcard and then pauses for the student to answer. Students can save the link on their phones and practice these questions on their own! You can click here to view it.

Thank You Tutors!
Great news! The glitch with the link to submit your tutoring hours has been resolved. Thank you to everyone who resubmitted your hours to me. I am almost finished getting all the hours caught up and have only a few missing hours still; I will send out follow-up emails if I need anything from you. Thanks again for all you do!

Welcome to our Newest Citizen
Nancy Galway just witnessed her student, Tha Tay Paw, take her Oath of Citizenship in Durham. Kudos to them both for all their hard work! I cannot imagine how emotional and joyous that ceremony was for them. Below is Nancy's moving account of the citizenship process with Tha Tay Paw. Please send your student's citizenship stories to me (a.reingold@cravenliteracy.org) because I would love to share them with all our tutors.
Welcome to our Newest Citizen
By Nancy Galway
On Friday, October 28, I had the pleasure of witnessing Tha Tay Paw take her Oath of Citizenship at the US Citizenship and Immigration Service in Durham. For refugees, Burmese in this case, this in an awesome step in their lives. Tha Tay Paw has been studying to be a citizen for about 2 ½ years. She attends a weekly citizenship class offered through the Craven Literacy Council . She also takes a second class each week to study the English language. In all that time, she has missed maybe one of two classes, always arriving early with her beautiful smile and eagerness to learn.
Through Interfaith Refugee Ministry, Tha Tay Paw arrived in the U.S. on July 14, 2010, with her husband and three children. A fourth child was born here. She works in a part-time job as an office cleaner. Her husband works full-time for the Butterball Co. In addition to this, she has shown her dedication and desire to attend classes twice a week. The application process for citizenship is multi-fold. There is an 18-page 'Application for Citizenship' form to be completed, a challenge in itself. This is sent for review and if accepted, a notice is sent for the applicant to go to Durham for fingerprinting. After a waiting period, the applicant is given a date to go back to Durham. They then take the 'Interview Test' on reading, writing, history, government, and understanding verbal questioning. When that is passed, the third and final step is to go back to Durham to take the Oath of Citizenship, as happened on October 28.
There were 57 applicants representing about 40 countries, who had completed all the requirements. The Oath Ceremony consisted of short speeches, the Pledge of Allegiance, a video of American places and faces. There was also a video of the President welcoming and encouraging new citizens to observe their rights and responsibilities as naturalized citizens. The new citizens were asked to stand and be recognized as they received their 'Certificate of Naturalization'. Following that, there were many pictures, hugs, and yes, some happy tears.
What a privilege it was to be a witness to that solemn and happy occasion. Many thanks are due the Craven Literacy Council and all its supporters. They have the will, the desire, and the excitement to enable the process.

Next New Tutor Training Workshop
Please encourage your friends and family to visit the CLC website to learn more about the January 2017 New Tutor Training. Registration is open. The next workshop will begin January 17, 2017, and will continue with sessions on January 19, 24, 26, and please note, a follow up session on March 9 (all Tuesdays and Thursdays). These training sessions will be from 9:30am to 12:30pm. All sessions will be held at Craven Literacy Council Meeting Rooms, 2507 - F Neuse Blvd.
We want to personally congratulate the 12 graduates of the October New Tutor Training class! Hurricane Matthew attempted to interfere with our progress, however we persevered and will be finishing up our training early November. These individuals have already accepted student assignments and will be engaging in First Meetings and Basic Orientation for the month of November. We plan to take advantage of the kind offers of tutoring space with our Literacy Partners for those students who are capable.

Carol's Tutor Tips: Tutor Space with our
Literacy Partners
We are getting a little crowded...IF you meet during the daytime hours, please consider using Mount Olive College, NC Works, The Housing Authority of New Bern, or Craven Community College Library at Barker Hall to study with your students. We can help you with directions to these locations and arrange for a learning space. If you have already arrived at Office F and cannot find a space, please come down and see us in Office A. We can always find room for you in our offices.
