Need A Speaker?

Important Info Concerning Hours Submissions! Please Read! (And don't forget the other great articles too!)
 Greetings!

Thank you so much for your resounding support for the TARGETED TUTORING program. There were 40 tutors in attendance at the September 28 in-service to learn how to best support the instruction of their students with informal assessments. These informal assessments will be a useful checkup for tutors and students to monitor learning progress. If you were unable to attend this valuable workshop, reach out to me via email (c.mccormick@cravenliteracy.org) so we can make arrangements to give you your student's informal assessment. Thank you for you dedicated support!!

Celebrating Craven Literacy Council's 30th Anniversary with
We would be delighted if you will join us in celebrating Craven Literacy Council's 30th Anniversary by encouraging your friends to donate $30 to combat illiteracy. This $30 gift can change a life.  We will be emailing more information and hope you will help spread the word. This information can also be found on our website at www.cravenliteracy.org.  Our goal is for 500 people to donate $30 for a total of $15,000.  Thank you so much for your help and support!  YOU are the reason we are able to increase the literacy skills of our students and therefore help improve lives!

Please Return Unused Curriculum Materials

We are inventorying our curriculum materials. Please look through your instructional materials and TURN IN any unwanted materials that you are no longer using. This will help keep the materials up to date in our library as well as saving us funds with fewer orders. Thank you!

Please Resubmit Hours for August and September

First of all, I want to thank all of you for submitting your hours each month.  Unfortunately, we have had issues with the online submission and have not been receiving the hours reports from you.  Therefore, we have set up a new email account online.  This means that we need you to resubmit your August and September hours. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and believe that this will solve the problem.  Please click here http://www.cravenliteracy.org/tutor-form.html to resubmit your hours if you have one student, or for group hours click here: http://www.cravenliteracy.org/tutor-form-many.html .

It may seem like a little thing that matters even less, but it does matter.  We are required by some of our funding sources to provide this information.  Thank you so very much for your understanding and patience with me as I have had to pester you several times for your hours. When you are submitting your hours online, include your email address; then if I call you looking for hours, you can just forward your copy to me. Thanks again for all you do for your student.  You are greatly appreciated.

Craven Literacy Council Celebrates Volunteers

Craven Literacy Council celebrated National Literacy Month with a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on September 13, 2016.  Craven Literacy Council has approximately 125 active tutors and other volunteers who are the heart of the organization.  These volunteers gave almost 13,000 hours to the organization last fiscal year.  They worked with students who needed help with reading, writing, speaking, technology, achieving citizenship, getting a drivers' license, reading prescription labels, completing job applications and other forms, as well as helping with fundraisers, training new tutors, and raising awareness of adult literacy in our community.

Janet Peregoy was named the Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding service and advocacy of adult literacy in our community.  Four individuals; JoAnn Kerrick, Dorothea Neely, Mary Spooner, and Debi Lupia were recognized for their induction into the Grand Club for achieving 1000 lifetime volunteer hours with Craven Literacy Council.

Amy's First Month

I love my job!

After a month at CLC, I held my first New Student Intake. What fun. After explaining to the students what our wonderful CLC tutors offer, I moved on to the "Do you have time for English class" presentation. This is where I held and then began filling a laundry basket (a metaphor for my life) with symbols of everyday complications; cooking, kids, CLC classes, homework, illness, laundry, one job, two jobs. As the basket fills, my knees buckled under the weight of "my busy (filled) life." Everyone understood the message and possibly enjoyed the delivery.

Even the mention of homework scared no one away.  Each of the 17 students came on time to their first one on one assessment with me. And yes, we did practice every sentence (twice) on our famous yellow card.

Our potential students come from Yemen, Iraq, Vietnam, Myanmar, Mexico, and Thailand. One man has a pet raccoon (his photos of "Lucky" were adorable). One man grew up listening to Voice of America! Sadly, another potential student has had several family members killed by ISIS. Nine are women; eight are men. One woman wants to work on her GED, another to perfect her reading and writing for work. A devoted mother's sole interest is improving her communication with her children's teachers and doctors. Every person I met was fantastic and eager to meet their tutor to be.

Next New Tutor Training Workshop

The next New Tutor Training Workshop will begin Tuesday, January 17, 2017 and will continue with sessions on January 19, 24, 26, and a follow-up session on March 9 (Tuesdays and Thursdays).  These training sessions will be from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Please spread the word to your friends who you think would enjoy tutoring.

WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS!  THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO FOR YOUR STUDENT AND CLC!

Carol's Tutor Tips:  Using Informal Assessments

Amy, Debby and Sarah (a valuable office volunteer) have tirelessly created the first set of informal assessments for your students. Each student has a specific informal assessment matched to the pre-test your student took at the beginning of the instructional year.
How do you use the Informal Assessment?

You may use the informal assessment as a study guide. You can study one question each tutoring session and review important strategies and skills your student needs to use to understand the question.

You may use the informal assessment to evaluate the instructional materials you are currently using. Are you studying what your student needs to know for their test? If not, think about making an appointment with me to look at some alternate or additional materials you can use with your student to improve their educational growth.

You may use the informal assessment to teach test taking tips. Many or our students have never taken a test or have limited experience in this area. Practicing test taking skills will help your student perform with increased accuracy on the post-test, and inform you and CLC what instructional areas will be important to study to increase your student's literacy levels.

There are many other ways in which you can use these informal assessments. Please email me with any questions you have about this exciting new program.
