Staff Resignation!!
We are very sad to announce that Cathy Weiss is moving to Virginia. Her last day at Craven Literacy Council will be Thursday, August 25. Be sure to stop in and wish her bon voyage and many thanks for her years of service to CLC and dedication to the students. We are excited for her that she will be living much closer to her grandchildren, but will truly miss her!

Greetings!
Cheers to the New Tutor Training Class of July 2016!!! We are delighted to welcome this awesome new group of volunteers. If you see someone new, please reach out to them and give them a warm welcome. We will be having another Tutor Training in October.
The New Readers' Library is up and running in Office F located in the Resource area. Thank you to these volunteers; Luann Rottmann, Debi Lupia, Amy Reingold, Jo Eckert, Debby Guillory, Catherine Austin and Ledis Noriega for their tireless efforts towards this project. Please feel free to take any books that are marked free home with you.
Thank you to each and everyone of you who gives their time and talent to our organization.

 And Some Test Results:
Of the students who were given end-of-year tests, we're thrilled to report that 37 of them increased an Educational Functioning Level (EFL)! That is, they moved from one EFL to a higher EFL (for example, from "LOW Beginning ESL" to "HIGH Beginning ESL"). And even more students saw their scores increase but not quite high enough to move into the next EFL. This is exciting news! Thank you, Tutors! Please join us in congratulating your students on the results of their hard work.

New Readers' Library at CLC
Due to the donation of many books, we now have a larger Readers' Library at CLC grouped by reading level of the book. It is located in office F. The books are arranged in groups such as Preschool, Early Elementary, Upper Elementary/Middle School, Young Adult and Adult. These books are available for your use and can be borrowed on an honor system. There is no sign out card. Take what you want, read them, and return them when you are done.
Students and tutors are encouraged to choose books that might be enjoyed by children or grandchildren and to read to them in your home. Modeling the act of reading in the home is very important to a child's achievement in school.
Many thanks are extended to all who helped label and sort these books! We are accepting donations of magazines to add to this collection. The magazines should be no more than one year old and do not need to be returned to the CLC Readers' Library. The magazines could be incorporated in so many ways into classroom lessons.

Carol's Tutor Tips
If you plan to read a book from the New Readers' Library with your student, consider using the Before, During After (Directed Reading) Strategy. You can preview and predict what you think the passage will be about using the title or headings. Discuss the topic to find out what you both already know about it. As you read, encourage your student to make predictions about the content. After you are finished, discuss what the selection actually said and if possible discuss the message between the lines. If you want a more detailed explanation of this strategy, please refer to p. 90, Activity 47 in the Teaching Adults, A Literacy Resource Book. It is a blue book located in the Curriculum Library in Office A.

Testing: A Never-ending Story!
A hearty "Thank you" to all who recently helped in the process of testing your students! And for those of you who missed out on the fun...your turn may be coming! As always we will reach out to you, the tutor, to get your suggestion of a suitable time for testing your student. The test can be given during a normal class time, or else it can be scheduled so as not to interfere with your instruction. Why test now? Some students hadn't studied long enough to be tested in June, but now are due. Other students who were recently tested needed re-testing with a different assessment to get a valid starting score for the new year. Thanks, in advance, for your assistance!
