Need A Speaker?

We would love to speak to your organization or church group about the work of Craven Literacy Council. Please contact Donna Marshall at d.marshall@cravenliteracy.org or 252-637-8079 to schedule a speaker.

Hours Needed NOW!!

Our instructional year ended on June 30. We are hurrying to finish end-of-year reports before deadlines which are looming. Please send in your tutoring hours for any months you have not reported! Send in your report even if only to say that there were zero hours. It's critical for CLC's funding that we can document the instruction our students received, and we want to give you, the tutors, credit for the time you've so kindly volunteered.

 Greetings From the Executive Director

After my first month on the job, I realize I have only just begun to get a glimpse of the significant and dedicated work being done by our tutors, students and staff; not only on-site but in numerous locations throughout our community. It has also become crystal clear that I am joining an inspired team that shares a common mission. I truly appreciate the opportunity to spread the word about the impactful work our council provides so we can reach more people in need, recruit more tutors and build community support to sustain our organization's growth in the future. Together, we are changing our community by changing one life at a time through literacy.

Thank you for your warm welcome,

Sandra

New Program Assistant - Debby Guillory

Craven Literacy Council is delighted to welcome Debby Guillory to our staff as the new Program Assistant.  She will be working closely with Carol and Cathy helping with student and program needs, as well as monitoring the monthly hours reporting. Debby is from California, but has lived in many different states and also Japan.  She describes herself as a cat person, but loves all animals.  Debby enjoys paper crafts and is very active in her church.  Please introduce yourself to Debby the next time you are in the office so she can get to know each of our wonderful tutors and students!

 Greetings!

Thank you to all of the wonderful tutors who were able to attend this month's Tutor In-Service "Please Repeat That!", on listening and speaking skills. We practiced many techniques and activities you can use with any level student. Please note that we now have a Listening and Speaking Skills section in our Curriculum Library located in Office A. If you would like for me to show you how to use these materials, don't hesitate to make an appointment to come in. We invite you to make copies of any of the materials to use with your students. I plan to offer this In-Service again in the fall to tutors who were unable to attend. If you would like to be invited, please send me an email at c.mccormick@cravenliteracy.org.

Tell your friends about the next New Tutor Training Workshop scheduled for Tuesday, July 12, 14, 19 and 21 with a follow up session on September 20, from 9:30 to 12:30. Your friends can register at www.cravenliteracy.org (CLC's website). We have 16 people interested and room for more because we plan to meet at Mount Olive College. If you have any questions or need more information, feel free to call Craven Literacy Council or email me.

Thank you for all you do to support Craven Literacy Council.

Share Your Student's Good News!

Please be sure to let us know about your student's achievements or life events! Has your student gotten a job? Has your student achieved citizenship? Has your student welcomed a new baby into the family? Has your student passed a test at work or passed a class at the community college or elsewhere? We want to congratulate, celebrate, and share the news more widely (assuming the student says it's okay).

Spread the Word:  New Tutor Training

Please help us spread the word about the next NEW TUTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP in July! The workshop will begin on Tuesday, July12 and will continue with sessions on July 14, 19, 21 and a follow up session on September 20 (Tuesdays and Thursdays). These training sessions will be from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. All sessions will be held at Craven Literacy Council, 2507-F Neuse Blvd. All are encouraged to attend an orientation during the first hour of Session 1 to learn more about Craven Literacy Council and find out what it means to be a tutor.

Carol's Tutor Tips

Do you often feel like you're struggling to have a conversation with your student? It's difficult to encourage your student to speak sometimes, especially if they are shy or do not like open ended activities. Check out Chapter 5 titled "Listening and Speaking Activities" in Teaching Adults; An ESL Resource Book. If you can't find the book, ask and we will show you where it is in the Curriculum Library. This chapter has 48 pages of activities that would be helpful to use with beginner, intermediate, and advanced level students. If you find an activity you like, pass it along to us so we can share it with other tutors.

When You Are Done Tutoring, Please Leave the Door Open!

If you meet with your student at CLC, please leave the door open when your tutoring session is over. That helps others identify which rooms are available. Thanks!

Remember: Bring your key & keep the door locked!!!
