Greetings!
It is hard to believe that this is the last article I will be writing for Tutor Talk as an Executive Director. I am excited that the CLC Board of Directors found such an awesome new director in Sandra McKinney. I know you will enjoy getting to know her. In my farewell, I just want to say thank you. Thank you so much for all the support and encouragement you have given me through the years. When I first stepped foot into CLC on Glenburnie Road in 2009, you welcomed me with smiling faces and open arms. Those of you that have been around since then know we have seen many changes. This is such a growing and vibrant organization and there are many things I will miss terribly. You are definitely one of those things I will miss. You have challenged me to be better because each of you is an inspiration and example of how one should live a life. Thank you for being a great volunteer, supporter, and friend. I will miss seeing you, but I truly hope this is not good-bye, but see you later. I will let the staff know as soon as I know my next step. Hopefully you can stop by and see me sometime.
Until we meet again,
Donna

Farewell Donna and Judy

Overflowing Our Seams!
We know sometimes it's hard to find tutoring space at CLC. Just this morning (Tuesday after Memorial Day), we witnessed a more-than-full-house situation. Every classroom in Office F was taken and a small group was working in the entry area. Four more tutors brought their students to Office A and were squeezed into tutoring spaces here. A tutor asked why we're so full, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays. A partial answer is that many of our students who work at factory jobs like to study early in the week because they've had a chance to rest over the weekend and are more ready to learn. Additionally, we've just matched several new tutors with their students, and those folks are now also looking for tutoring space. But what can be done? Mt. Olive University permits CLC tutors and students to use their classrooms during daytime hours, no reservations required. Simply stop at the reception desk as you enter and you'll be directed to an available space. The public library in downtown New Bern has one dedicated tutoring room which can be reserved in advance, but other folks have worked quietly at tables in the public area. One of our tutors says that there's a pleasant space in the library's Children's Room that she and her student love to use. Other tutors have arranged to use space in their churches. Please spread the word about any other off-site tutoring spaces you know of - and THANKS for your patience!

June 28 Tutor In-Service
All of our students need help with Listening and Speaking in their everyday lives. Seeking medical care, raising children, shopping, maintaining a job and achieving citizenship are situations that require competency in listening and speaking. Tutors, please attend this valuable workshop to understand the importance of teaching these literacy skills and practice strategies to improve your student's abilities.
The event is offered 3 times on Tuesday, June 28.
10:30am to 12:00pm
1:30pm to 3:00pm
5:30 to 7:00pm
Sign-up sheets are available at Craven Literacy Council or feel free to email Carol at c.mccormick@cravenliteracy.org or call the office at 252-637-8079 to enroll in the workshop. Please let us know which session you plan to attend.

Hours Needed
Please, PLEASE make every effort to see that your hours reports are up-to-date. We need to receive a report for every month of your tutoring assignment, even if there were zero tutoring hours. Remember that you can submit them via our website in addition to filling out the paper forms available at the CLC office. If you have any questions about the process or encounter any problems, please call the office 252-637-8079 and we'll be happy to assist.

These training sessions will be from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Carol's Tutor Tips
If you cannot attend the June 28 Tutor In- Service, please let me know. You can reach me by email at c.mccormick@cravenliteracy.org . I would love to share some of the techniques we will cover in the in-service. If there is a small group of tutors, I would be happy to host a mini-workshop to cover this very important information.

Vision Help
If you and your student meet at CLC and your student forgets (or doesn't realize he needs) reading glasses, we have a box filled with a variety of donated reading glasses for your student to use while here. The box of glasses sits on top of the brown wooden cabinet in the main hallway in Office F.

Articles Needed for Student Newsletter
It's not too late to submit an article for the June issue of the Student Newsletter. Tutors, please encourage your student to contribute. A short paragraph will do! Articles should be submitted by June 10th to Judy Willoughby. Many thanks.

I Love That Lady Recipient
The Craven Literacy Council is very delighted and honored that one of our tutors - Web Slaughter - was a finalist of the I Love That Lady organization that recognizes women who affect positive change in our community. Web has been a CLC tutor for over 20 years, and was one of the first recipients of our Grand Club for tutors with over 1000 hours of volunteer time. CLC received a check for $250 in Web's honor. Thank you Web for your many years of dedication to helping our students improve their lives!
