Need A Speaker?

We would love to speak to your organization or church group about the work of Craven Literacy Council. Please contact Donna Marshall at d.marshall@cravenliteracy.org or 252-637-8079 to schedule a speaker.

 Greetings!

We have a great need for tutors so we ask your help to spread the word about the next NEW TUTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP beginning April 12!

Also, if you haven't picked up your STUDY GUIDE for your student, be sure to stop by Office A between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. We urge you to use these all year around!

Be sure to read below about how the tutor sign-in sheets have been revised. This was a great suggestion from one of our tutors. If you have any ideas that would improve your experience as a tutor or help the office run more efficiently, please let us know.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication,

Carol

Revised Sign-In Sheets

The Tutor Sign-In sheets in Office F have been slightly modified. Please include the expected length of time you plan to tutor. This way other tutors can estimate when the tutoring room will be open for their use. Also be sure to record your sign out time so other tutors know that rooms are available. Thank you for your attention to this detail!
Spread the Word:  New Tutor Workshop

Please help us spread the word about the next NEW TUTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP in April! The workshop will begin on Tuesday, April 12 and will continue with sessions on April 14, 19, 21 and a follow up session on June 21 (Tuesdays and Thursdays). These training sessions will be from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. All sessions will be held at Craven Literacy Council, 2507-F Neuse Blvd. All are encouraged to attend an orientation during the first hour of Session 1 to learn more about Craven Literacy Council and find out what it means to be a tutor.

Testing Testing Testing!!

Who (does this involve)? Virtually every Craven Literacy Council student (with a few exceptions).

What (is this all about)? The last quarter of our instructional year began on April 1st - which means it's POST TESTING, or Assessment season!

Why (do we do this)? We do this to determine student achievement, to let tutors know how their student has progressed, and to provide information for our funders.

When (will it happen)? Between now and June 30 we'll strive to assess nearly every active CLC student. Because the testing schedule is determined largely by how many instructional hours a student has accumulated, it's very important that tutors submit their monthly hours promptly and for all months, even if the number of hours was zero for a particular month.

How (does the process work)? We will soon contact you to ask your help to make an assessment
appointment with your student. A typical assessment takes between 40 and 70 minutes. You may choose to give us a part of a regular tutoring session; otherwise we'll ask you to help identify another day and time when your student can be assessed. After we score the assessment, we'll review the student's results with you. We know good things are happening here at CLC - the testing gives us a way to document and celebrate it!

How (can I help my student get ready)? We have study guides prepared for you to use with your student. Not only does working with the study guide help in preparation for the test, but - even more importantly- we urge you to use it throughout the year as a way for your student to practice the essential life skills they need to master! If you haven't received yours yet, please stop by during office hours or ask for other arrangements if you can't come during that time period.

Where (will the testing be done)? It will probably be done at the location where you meet with your student. However some assessments may be given at Mt. Olive University's facility on Trent Road (next to Bear Town Cinema). The location will be clarified when we contact you regarding a date for the assessment.

If you have reason to think you and your student will soon stop your work together, please notify Cathy (c.weiss@cravenliteracy.org) or Judy (j.willoughby@cravenliteracy.org) so that we can schedule a final assessment ASAP. Additionally, if you have any questions about the testing process in general, please contact Cathy or Judy. We'll be happy to help!

Carol's Tutor Tips

Tutoring Tips: Maintaining a STUDENT PORTFOLIO

Are you collecting student work along the way to document examples of student progress? A Student Portfolio includes...

  • Goals, a check-up from a skill book, an article read, anything that helps to show student's progress

  • Date EVERYTHING

  • Use a Notebook or folder to keep writing samples too.

  • Be sure to make a copy for you and give the original to the student to keep.

  • Refer back to the Student Portfolio with your student to show how they have progressed!

 Executive Director Search Committee

The Search Continues.  To date the Executive Director Search Committee has advertised the opening using many resources.  We are asking you to continue to help us get the word out.  The link to the job is: Click Here to View Job Posting.  The application deadline is April 13, 2016.  In the meantime, if you know of someone who may be interested and have the qualifications, please feel free to have them contact CLC's Board and Search Committee Chairman JoAnn Kerrick at jobs@cravenliteracy.org for additional information on the position.

Study Guides

Please stop by Office A between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm to pick up a STUDY GUIDE for your student(s). We urge you to use these all year around!  The study guides can be used as a way to review important English Language skills. Make it your practice to begin or end your tutoring session with a 10-minute review of any of the activities and concepts highlighted in the study guides. Expand the activities and be sure to use real life materials to practice these essential life skills our students need to build a strong foundation in literacy. Please let us know if we can help. Call Craven Literacy Council at 252-637-8079 or email Carol McCormick at c.mccormick@cravenliteracy.org if you have any questions, or would like for us to leave a copy for you in Office F, or send one to you in the mail.

Save the Date:  Trivia Night and Silent Auction

On Friday, June 3rd, the 2nd Annual Trivia Night and Silent Auction will be held at the Harrison Ministry Center, 311 Middle Street in downtown New Bern. This enjoyable event features four rounds of spirited competition with teams/tables of up to 6 people competing for cash prizes, bragging rights, and the Trivia trophy. You may BYOT (Bring Your Own Team) or join a team at the event.

The event (6:00 - 8:30 p.m.) begins with time to socialize, have a drink, gather your team together while checking out the competition, and peruse the large selection of silent auction items including gift baskets and dining packages.

When the games begin at 6:30 p.m., Master of Ceremonies Nelson McDaniel reads the trivia questions, possibly as mundane as - "which state is the largest consumer of Jello?" - that are answered by the different teams. At the end of each round, answers are calculated and scored by a panel of judges who award cash prizes to the winners of that round. At the end of the competition, the top winners take home $500 and the Trivia Night Trophy. Prizes are also awarded for best team name.

Tickets are $50 per person and includes delicious light supper fare served between the four rounds. Tickets may be purchased at the Craven Literacy office, on our website www.cravenliteracy.org, or:
